Is Romney the only possible candidate who can deliver and actually win a national election? (vanity)

I understand Mitt Romney is unpopular on FR. But I was just reading a series of posts on a conservative website and in a discussion of the GOP candidate, a poster made the comment, "Romney is the only possible candidate who can deliver enough cross-over votes and actually win a national election."

The gist of the discussion was that if, specifically, Rick Perry or any other candidates perceived as "too conservative" were the nominee, the Democratic base would be "energized" and insure a Dem victory. (Note: I'm a Perry supporter.)

Can anyone comment on the validity of the above speculation? Would having a candidate who is "too conservative" energize the Dem base and, even more importantly, turn off large numbers of independent voters and, thus, give Obama a 2nd term? (What a sickening thought)?

True on some of your points. But if Perry wins, I will not be enthusiastic at all. No money, assistance nothing. Another RINO is not exciting. However he will get my hold my nose vote for another ridiculous candidate that the GOP puts in front of us.

What? Created by Bob Dole? Since the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress for 40 years until 1994, how did HE "create" it?

He completely spear-headed the halt to Clinton's healthcare bill in the Senate. You malcontents are completely delusional.

OK, he didn’t create it. He co-sponsored it and he was very vocal in support of it as well. I can remember it being one of the things he sold as a positive during his 96 election (and yes, I voted for him in the election, but against him in the primary).

But good of you to toss out the insults since you can’t just leave it as a polite argument.

Well, how 'bout if I kiss you on your forehead?

The original version of the bill was nothing like the final draft and Dole said (in his book, I think) that when he saw what the Democrats were doing with it he signed on in order to reign it in. Like GW Bush tried to do years later when he had the Republicans claw back the restrictions and penalties.

No one could have forseen what the Left would do with it. Okay, Jesse Helms. my personal hero probably did. He voted against it.

Ah yes, we move from insults to snark. You are just so impressive.

Dole had been a politician for decades by the point that ADA was coming through. If he didn’t understand unintended consequences by that point, he was either indifferent or idiotic.

Though let’s be honest here, on the face of it, the bill doesn’t have enough redeeming qualities even before being steered to the ridiculous excesses caused by the Left to be worthy of support. The premise that businesses be mandated to eat an expense so they can cater to customers they may never even have is pure garbage. If Dole couldn’t see that, he was no conservative.

Plenty of economists and right wing commentators at the time cautioned against it. Dole (and Bush Sr. as well) didn’t listen.

You judge me harshly, knave! I snark not. I was sincere and sorry I sounded bitchy.

This is ridiculous. Bob Dole's voting record was as conservative as anyone you could name, but out of thousands of votes I'm sure there are some that he had to compromise on. All Senators do. But your zero tolerance for what he should have known, proves that you have no understanding of what makes a conservative.

If that was too strong and I have, once again, damaged your tender feelings...I'm SORRY!!!

That is childish and stupid. On ANY day Romney is better than 0. Even if it is only a small amount.

And before you start calling me a Romney supporter check my record. Romney sucks but 0 sucks canal water.

Romney is a dead fish/ He has no charisma, he is dull as dish water, there is no “ Fire in the Belly” He just goes along saying me too. Get rid of this Turkey, he could not be elected dog catcher in Salt Lake City.

Not that I particularly care for Wikipedia when it comes to politics, it does cite Bob Dole as a moderate.

Generally the bent on Wiki is left wing, which would tend to shove all conservatives into one corner with little distinction.

Though it should also be mentioned, that if we’re not going to see Dole as a moderate, McCain is also a conservative.

Whether you like it or not and despite huge disappointments McCain’s voting record is conservative, but I don’t consider him a statesman. Dole is.

I couldn't agree more. However, if he winds up being the nominee sitting the general out because it is ANY of the numerous Republicans disliked here on FR is stupid. The time is now to make sure Romney is not the nominee.

McCain could certainly be considered a conservative for his overall voting record. He just gets extremely loony at times and takes really bad positions against his own party. I’d guess he’s solidly conservative 80% of the time at least. He’s just way off the reservation those other 20%.
