CHICAGO (AP) - More than 5,000 U.S. children and teens are injured each year in falls from windows, according to a study that suggests the problem stretches beyond urban high-rises. The research found many children fall from first- and second-story windows.

"This is more than just a big-city problem," said senior author Dr. Gary Smith of Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Suburban mother, Beth Harlan, knows that to be true.

I have mixed feeling on this story.

First, I feel sorry for parents who lose a child this way.

But, if you are a responsible parent and know where your kids are at all times, this should never happen.

Finally, WE NEED TO BAN WINDOWS!!!

Yep, this looks like yet another problem that only the Federal Government can solve.

“The public awareness campaign is an important first step in building consensus. But not until you get the mandatory regulations in place are you going to see the kind of impact you’re trying to achieve,” said Dr. Andrew D. Racine of Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in New York’s Bronx borough, where window fall injuries now are seen only rarely.

Window guards cost about $20 to $40 per window. A quick release feature allows escape from a fire or other emergency. Parents also should move furniture away from windows and open windows from the top, if possible.

In the near future, guess what YOU’RE going to have to pay for before you can sell or lease your home...

That said, is there some magical stage in brain development that causes us humans to lose all fear of heights between infancy and age five?

BAR WINDOWS!

What kinda mother brings her infant into a bar, then sets him up in an open window? Oh, yeah, an Obama voter... :)

children and teens

How many of these people are 18 or 19 years old, very drunk, attending a college party?

The easy assumption is that these are two-year-olds playing near an open window. Certainly a lot of the accident are exactly that. But, like the gun statistics, I think a lot of the "children" covered by the statistics are people who simply ought to know better.

Not just kids. I saw an old cat trying to lean on a missing widow screen and it fell out pretty fast too!

How many more Mr. Speaker.....how many more? We obviously must ban all windows and brick up the existing ones.

Detroit has been ahead of the curve on this. They have instituted a very successful "Safe Windows" initiative all over the city for the past 15 years. Here is one of the many homes that they made safe for children.

Since instituted, the numbers of children falling from windows has greatly decreased.

Ok now... we can probably solve the unemployment problem by requiring Childproof windows on ALL buildings that have windows. We can subsdize the costs of installing these government/Michelle Obama windows only if they are installed by union workers. Of course, the cost of reinstalling these windows correctly by nonunion workers is not subsidized and at the owners expense. Barred windows are not acceptable because we already know how many of our children fall through the cracks.

Good post...couldn't agree more.
Next thought that popped into my head, after the obvious point that you made, was the fact that tens of thousands of unborn children are willfully murdered each year by abortion.
WE NEED TO BAN ABORTION!!!

Very few children who fall from a one-story window will be seriously injured. The two-story windows should be kept locked, opened from the top, not have furniture underneath them, etc. The ones in my house were too stiff for a small child too push.

If you’re nursing the baby, and the 3 y.o. and 5 y.o. are playing in the house, you don’t know exactly where they are. Good quiet or bad quiet?

If you’re breaking up a fight between the 4 y.o. and the 6 y.o., you don’t know where the 18 month old is - they move fast.

If you have five or six young children, you will never know where they are unless you’ve got them locked into a room.

All I can say is, thank God they bounce pretty well.

The same parents who let their kids chew on window sills and get lead poisoning are the ones who let their kids play by open windows. Yes, accidents do happen but bad parenting is likely the cause.

My Pop installed a window guard on a 2nd story window after Mom caught me trying to climb over the window sill, into oblivion, at 4 years of age.

(To this day, I’ll never forget that barrier to my
flying lessons, without an airplane.)

From then on, instead of tossing myself out the window,
I tossed some of Mom’s cups and bowls to see what would happen when they landed.

(Surprisingly, they never moved away without telling me.)
