Remembering The Berlin Wall, 50 Years On (August 13th, 1961)

The Berlin Wall has now been torn down for nearly as long (22 years) as it stood (28 years). Yet it was such a powerful symbol of the Cold War that it still evokes a strong response today, a half-century after it was constructed in the summer of 1961.

Germans will gather this weekend at the spot where the wall stood and reflect on how it shaped their lives and their society. While most of the wall is gone, a section still stands in the center of the city on a street called Bernauer Strasse. When the city was divided, this area was a no-man's land, covered in barbed wire and constantly monitored from watch towers.

My father sent me pieces of that wall. Still have them. Also a piece in plastic for a key chain.

I remember visiting Berlin in 1976, and seeing the wall made me furious, and absolutely filled me with loathing for a system that would put so much effort into imprisoning it's people. The day the wall came down was on of the greatest days in history. Thank you R.W. Reagan.

Mr Gorbachev TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!

Here is a copy of the 1950 movie ‘The Big Lift’ about supplying Berlin during the blockade, the movie can be downloaded to a disc or a thumb drive for watching on the TV.

I never thought that it would come down in my lifetime. But then, I never imagined that we would ever have a president like Ronald Reagan either.

One of my all-time favorite movies, is "Goodbye, Lenin!" about a son attempting to shield the fall of the Wall from his mother because of her delicate health condition.

I have seen it, it was very creative.

The movie that really moved me was “The Lives of Others”, you might also like “The Rabbit Is Me”

Yes, the Lives of Others is also one of my favorites.

Another great movie which takes place in Berlin during the Cold War, is “One, Two, Three” one of the funniest movies ever.

I checked the library they don’t have “One, Two, Three”, but I will keep it in mind, I did read the description at IMDB and it sounds good.

My brother was in the Army in the 1950s and in Berlin when the wall went up. He said the troops were on special alert and there was grave concern that another war would break out. He had a special feeling of liberation when that wall finally came tumbling down.

Communism used to be a dirty word but it appears it is alive and well right here in the U.S.A. This video is alarming!
