Charles Aaron Bubba Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1967 NFL draft who later found fame as an actor, has died at the age of 66.

The life expectancy for NFL players is grim.
It's not just NFL players, it's also large men in general. There something about being at or near 300 lb that puts a lot of strain on the body. I'm not medically qualified to make an exact explanation but I'm willing to bet that this has a lot to do with it.

I grew up with the Colts when they were in Baltimore. Bubba was a special player. Not because of his weigh so much, it was his height. Statistics count sacks, they don’t count batted down passes as far as I know.

Certianly true. I don’t believe carrying that much weight is good for the circulatory system.
But I also think that repeated blows to the head are related to the early demise of football players.

Loved the Bubba - I was a Colts fan, too. A great player, and he just was a big old nice bear of a man. RIP to a class act.

I actually thoght he died years ago. He used to do TV ads in Baltimore for lawyers. Mclellan, Katzenberg, and Eisenberg.
