Nebraska girl born with no arms and legs has blamed unfair scoring after she failed to make her school's cheerleading squad three years in a row.
Julia Sullivan, 16, has complained to the school board after she said she was given 'no accommodation for her disability' during try-outs.
The wheelchair user did not make the team after she received a low score in the jumps/kicks category of the trials.
Miss Sullivan got her highest marks in the communication skills and enthusiasm/spirit categories.
The Aurora High School student, who said that she likes to dance, said: 'I just think it would be fun.'

IMHO, this is a continuation of the idea, prevalent in today’s society, that any activity is for the edification of the person doing it rather than for the onlooker.
I see it in art, in music, and in this kind of story.
It’s not how good the art is, the music, etc. It’s how the person that’s doing it FEELS.
I saw an art show on the tube a few months ago - it was all about how happy each piece made the artist, not if people liked the work or not.
Sorry, but IFR means you can’t see outside, not that the cockpit is a black quagmire of darkness and instruments are not illuminated etc. You need to see the instruments, right?

The headline is quite misleading, as she does have arms; they are simply not formed properly. She is able to hold her instrument for her marching band; she would presumably be quite capable of using a contraption to hold a sign or a megaphone. In fact, the article implies that she scored highly in all categories except jumps and kicks.
The good thing is, she is young and has time to learn that, intellectually, she is NOT limited very much.
She can use her strengths in other areas to great advantage, and no doubt will.
It’s her parents I have questions about.

I have not had tv since 1997, but I get exposed to stuff from time to time. To someone who does not have tv shaping his “social compass”, the wheelchair kid looked like the classic “token gimp”. And I honestly believe that this absurd fictional situation affected this girls (and her parents) world view to the point that they honestly believe that sort of thing happens outside of fiction.
That’s not how it works. Ever. It sometimes appears that way, but the “social nuances” are much different than how it is depicted on that show.
