My biggest complaint about handicapped stalls is summed up in two things:
1. There are tons of them and they are usually ALL empty.
2. They are the only open spaces in the entire parking lot.
I would also like them to raise the bar regarding who should get them. If someone uses a scooter they don’t need one. It just saves them battery life. I consider them pretty much a scam and would like to see them eliminated. We somehow survived before them. We could again.
I used to marvel at the upper body strength of people in wheelchairs.
Now, I marvel at the girth of people in scooters.
I know there may be ADA requirements vis-a-vis square footage but some lots have so many handicap spots (usually all empty) that I say ‘If everyone in a wheelchair showed up to fill the spots and went inside you wouldn’t be able to squeeze into the store.’
Yeah they do. In fact they usually are the ones who really need them. Getting a scooter out of a van means that you need extra space around you.
I am pleased to see that they are now putting in handicapped parking places that are meant for vans with scooter lifts in them.
