(CNN) -- Southwest Airlines disciplined a pilot whose profanity-laced rant about flight attendants was heard by other airplane crews and controllers, officials said Wednesday.
The unidentified pilot bashed flight attendants as a "continuous stream of gays and grannies and grandes," according to a transcript of the March 25 flight over central Texas. The pilot on the Austin to San Diego flight was referring to the sexual orientation, age and attractiveness of flight attendants.

Oh that was just mean. lol
Well, you said other lines were open for the ATC and pilots, right? Did the reporter make up those quotes?
No. I’m sure that the quotes are accurate but that changes not one thing if you ask me.
“It wasn’t me” get’s learned at very young ages in our society doesn’t it?
Just for drill, do you have any idea just how many radios there are in this county in active use at any given moment?
Well neither do I but I can tell you that the number is VERY large.
So the quotes are accurate, the ATC and pilots were unable to communicate during this idiot’s rant but that doesn’t matter to you? And I guess I’m totally baffled by your comment complaining that those other pilots wanted the ATC to know they weren’t endangering their flights.
I will rely on information given by my husband, who has been in communications for over 30 years. A "keyed" microphone on a repeater system blocks other communications until the user releases.
ABC radio news reported this during their top of the hour agitprop blurb today. You would have thought he had murdered somebody.
Yep, only the occasional Cuban wanting to take the plane somewhere else.
Thanks, I didn't know that. I've always sort of wondered why things were so different back in the day (except for the Eastern Air Shuttle).
Ahh, Public Slaughter Airlines......
Other than to get some reporters (in this case Steven Deans) name up in lights I would greatly appreciate someone explaining to me just why this is a newsworthy event.
Anyone who is not celebrating gay is a demon that must get ten minutes of hate in the liberal media.
Ah ha!
THAT explains it more fully! Thanks!
Yes radios! That is what they use to communicate with. the same is true for police, fire, taxi, maritime vehicles and a host of others.
Ask your hubby if he knows what a first class commercial radio telephone operator’s license or an Extra class Amateur radio license is. I happen to hold both of those and have for probably more years than you have been alive.
The idiot pilot had his mike on continually, which blocked the ability for the ATC to reply to him. Within a certain range, no other pilots were able to communicate with the tower on that frequency. You said that wasn't true then said the ATC wasn't lying. So I'm still unsure if you agree with that or not.
Then you seemed to be attacking the other pilots for saying they were not the ones who had just endangered others with the rant.
Then you decided to school me in two way radio systems, which I can assure you I am familiar with. They are not like a land line telephone where you can talk while someone else is talking - you depress a button to talk, release to clear. Correct?
No. I expressed my opinion as to what this is REALLY about and you just don’t want to “get it”.
I attacked no one other than this reporter.
I doubt, very seriously, that you understand the FAA’s communication system at all. In fact, I doubt that many of the folks who work there fully understand it but that is and has been beside the point.
To repeat myself, this kind of thing happens ALL the time and in many different areas of society. In this case the reporter either heard the transmission on his scanner or was tipped of that it had occurred by one of his friends and used it to maximum effect to further his career.
I’m sure you are much older than my husband, which may or may not equal a better understanding of the workings of this equipment. His training in the Marine Corps, and use and rapair of that equipment in combat, and 30 years in the communication business probably doesn’t equal your ham radio license.
I’m sure that your husband is very good at what he does. Never said otherwise. Please thank him for his service to his country.
I stand by what I have said here.
My godmother's wife was one of the former models stepping up to be a stewardess. I still remember how gorgeous she was then, how glamorous. Everyone she worked with was a former model -- and I can't remember the airline, I'd have to ask my mom, but one of the big ones (maybe TWA at the time, or United).
I'm not sure if it was a requirement per se, but it seemed to be, from what she told us. The only thing is, she was married (to my godfather), so that requirement someone else mentioned must not have applied or already been gone (this is in the 70s).
Interesting, isn't it? I miss those glam days personally :0)
