Forgeries in the Bible's New Testament?
Discovery News ^ | 5-18-2011 | Rosella Lorenzi

Nearly half of the New Testament is a forgery, according to a provocative new book which charges that the Apostle Paul authored only a fraction of letters attributed to him, and the Apostle Peter just wrote nothing.

Written by Bart Ehrman, a former evangelical Christian and now agnostic professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, the book claims to unveil "one of the most unsettling ironies of the early Christian tradition:" the use of deception to promote the truth.

"The Bible not only contains untruths of accidental mistakes. It also contains what almost anyone today would call lies," Ehrman writes in "Forged: Writing in the Name of God -- Why the Bible’s Authors Are Not Who We Think They Are."....

also note:

“Written by Bart Ehrman, a former evangelical Christian and now agnostic professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill,”

Perhaps we can get Christopher Hitchens and Madelyn Murray O’Hare to contribute their opinions about Scripture, as well.

anyone else remember director Cameron finding the “body of Christ” about 3 years ago?
Don’t hear much about that anymore.

Let me guess.

One of the “fake” parts is where Paul says that homosexuality is perversion and sin.

Ehrman loves sensationalism.

This is the same "source criticism" slop that has been ladled out for more than a century now.

You know, I looked for the “satire” tag, but didn’t see it.

Sad, just sad.

An agnostic professor of religious studies. That to me is akin to an Amish teaching automotive repair.

H’mmm Ehrman’s timing is off, Easter is over, Christmas is a long time away. I guess he is shooting for Pentecost Sunday to make his splash.

I wonder what drove him from Evangelical beliver to agnostic?

Notice they say nothing of Islam and the Quran.
Of course, moHAMed himself said that quran ‘changes’ and he indicated that theree were at least four different qurans ‘revealed’ to him.

The biblical scholar, who also challenges the authenticity of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and John,

Curious, most of the biblical scholars I have read are of the opinion that Mark is the oldest and probably the only gospel to have been written by a contemporary of Jesus and also a witness to some of the events.

Most also believe that the other gospels were largely based of the Gospel of Mark.

I wonder what drove him from Evangelical beliver to agnostic?

He didn’t have anyone to sit with in the faculty lunch room.

He was lonely.

If a writing didn’t come directly from the hand of one of the apostles, that doesn’t mean it is a forgery. The ancient world had a different concept of forgery from what we have. What the early church did recognize, in accepting what became the canon of the New Testament, was that the writings represented the teachings of the apostles whose names are attached to them. There are early witnesses from the late 1st century and early 2nd century, that attest to some of the writings’ existence and authority. People from that time surely had some idea of where the writings came from.

I’m sure this guy knows that, and is just out to deceive the gullible.

You can always tell the ideological slant of the source by the headline and the first paragraph. As an example let's take this article and change it to:

Plagiarism in Martin Luther King's Speeches?

Nearly half of Martin Luther King's Speeches are plagiarized, according to a provocative new book which charges that the civil rights leader authored only a fraction of speeches attributed to him.

**************************

If this were the story, the article would be presented with the accusations LAST, not FIRST:

Conservatives Attack Martin Luther King

A controversial new book attacks civil rights leader Martin Luther King, making largely unsubstantiated claims that he authored only a fraction of speeches attributed to him.
