German grandchildren of Nazis delve into past

BERLIN – Rainer Hoess was 12 years old when he found out his grandfather was one of the worst mass murderers in history.

The gardener at his boarding school, an Auschwitz survivor, beat him black and blue after hearing he was the grandson of Rudolf Hoess, commandant of the death camp synonymous with the Holocaust.

"He beat me, because he projected on me all the horror he went through," Rainer Hoess said, with a shrug and a helpless smile. "Once a Hoess, always a Hoess. Whether you're the grandfather or the grandson — guilty is guilty."

Germans have for decades confronted the Nazi era head-on, paying billions in compensation, meticulously teaching Third Reich history in school, and building memorials to victims. The conviction Thursday in Munich of retired Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk on charges he was a guard at the Sobibor Nazi death camp drives home how the Holocaust is still very much at the forefront of the German psyche.

But most Germans have skirted their own possible family involvement in Nazi atrocities. Now, more than 65 years after the end of Hitler's regime, an increasing number of Germans are trying to pierce the family secrets.

The way the Muslims treat Jews in Europe makes me think there is a good chance of a repeat of the holocaust.

I have no idea what the gardener endured in the concentration camp, how many he saw shot on a guard’s whim, how many people he saw die from illness and malnutrition, what he had to do to survive, or how many of his family perished. Was he kept around to labor while his wife and children were gassed and their bodies incinerated?

What would that do to you mentally? I don’t know how many could survive that and go on happily ever after. Therefore without a crystal ball, I won’t pass judgment.

I acknowledge that I have a different viewpoint than you. With the exception of three who survived the camps and died early deaths after emigrating to this country, the rest of my relatives who didn’t get out of Europe before the war died in the camps. My father’s family was obliterated.

My husband knew someone whose last name was Goebbels. She was raised in Argentina, where her family fled at the end of the war. Whenever the question of what the father did during the war, the answer was he was too young to serve, just a teenager.

None of the killers in the Soviet regime were ever brought to justice.

Not true, in a sense.

During the "cleaning-up" phase of the Great Purge, Stalin executed most of those who perpetrated most of the purge for him.

They fell victim to the same system they worked for, which is in a sense justice.

Also, most of the prominent victims of the Purge were leading commies in the Revolution. Many of them were perpetrators in the great killings under Lenin. Stalin killed almost all the old bolsheviks, cosmic justice for them, in a way.

Sad to hear that.

The child had nothing to do with anything and no matter the suffering of the coward, the child is not, should not, be subject to blame for anything. He is a blameless child.

To attempt to understand (mitigate) the guilt of the coward because of what he MAY have experienced/saw and then use that supposed trauma as some sort of excuse to lessen the guilt of the coward that attacked an innocent child is not understandable in any sane mind.

Civilized people can't understand how a blameless, guiltless child is somehow the catalyst for violence towards him because of the actions of his grandfather.

Many people crack, many people suffer, but no one should attempt to mitigate the guilt of the coward that attacked an innocent child. And that is what he is, a coward, as it takes no man to attack a child, just a coward.

We come from different worlds.

Exacting revenge on a grandson for the actions of a grandfather is a great sin.

Demjanjuk is Ukrainian--but not a citizen of any country.

I read somewhere that at a certain point the Germans decreed that no more Germans would be prosecuted for actions done during the Third Reich (perhaps that didn't include the high-level people, in case any of them were hiding out in South America or somewhere else), but they still prosecute non-Germans. Demjanjuk wouldn't be accused of anything if the Germans had not invaded his native country. Somehow it doesn't seem right that the main perpetrators now get off scot-free, while their minor collaborators are still vulnerable.

According to the write-up in yesterday's Wall Street Journal, the evidence against Demjanjuk is primarily an ID card--I wonder if that's the same ID card some people think was fabricated by the KGB.

Demjanjuk was earlier falsely accused of being "Ivan the Terrible" and nearly was executed before that was disproven. Pat Buchanan spoke up on Demjanjuk's behalf, which made him popular with Ukrainian-Americans, who naturally voted for him when he ran for President.

The core of Gore's attempt to steal Florida's electoral votes in 2000 had to do with ballots cast for Pat Buchanan in Palm Beach County, Florida. Supposedly the voters meant to vote for Gore but were confused by the butterfly ballot. The media made it sound like all the voters in Palm Beach County were Jewish and hated Pat Buchanan, but in fact there are thousands of Ukrainian-Americans in that county and the votes in question in 2000 could well have been deliberately cast for Buchanan. Because of Demjanjuk.

Hermann Goering’s brother’s son was born in the US and flew 48 bombing raids over Germany in World War II while in the US Army Air Force.

If this is the way radical Jews are going to treat innocent people, shoot them in self defense. The generational cycle of tribal hate and violence is not justice in the West. It is a crime.

Someone clue in the ADL. They are still warring against Christians.

Helping out old war criminals and being a denier. That’s double-dealing if you ask me.

“Himmler's daughter, . . . a holocaust denier and works on behalf of a secret organization that helps out old war criminals.”

Then the ODESSA organization lives on still? Post-1945, ODESSA was very successful at getting former Nazis out of Europe and to safer, out of the way places, with new identities.

There’s a (successor?) organization called ‘Stille Hilfe’ (Silent Help). Himmler’s daughter’s name name now is Gudrun Burwitz. She lives a semi-underground existence in Munich.

From what I understand- the ODESSA name was a vetting and identifying word back then. You’d work it into a sentence when meeting a likely contact to establish that you were fleeing vermin. It got made into an organization by Frederick Forsythe’s book. There were several organizations with other names (’Scharnhorst’ being the only one that comes to mind at the moment) that smuggled criminals to the relative safety of South America.

These days, the Stille Hilfe mob helps out with putting up old nasties in retirement homes, and such.

That implies that there are people donating money to it. Hopefully, the German intelligence service is all over that, and better still if Mossad has compromised their computers and databases.

Have a friend named Deichmann.

The Eichmann family in Germany is a well-known and common name, the family business being the production of farming machinery, much like John Deere or Farmall is in the USA.

Looks like a hay roller.

Looks pretty hi tech for the Germans.
