Girl 'murdered' by Roman soldiers in north Kent
BBC ^ | April 28, 2011

The body of a girl thought to have been murdered by Roman soldiers has been discovered in north Kent.

Archaeologists working on the site of a Roman settlement near the A2 uncovered the girl who died almost 2,000 years ago.

"She was killed by a Roman sword stabbing her in the back of the head," said Dr Paul Wilkinson, director of the excavation.

"By the position of the entry wound she would have been kneeling at the time."

The Roman conquest of Britain began in AD43, and the construction of Watling Street started soon afterwards linking Canterbury to St Albans.

Many people have a romantic view of the Roman invasion, Dr Wilkinson said.

"Now, for the first time, we have an indication of how the Roman armies treated people, and that large numbers of the local populations were killed.

"It shows how all invading armies act the same throughout history. One can only imagine what trauma this poor girl had to suffer before she was killed," he said.

She will be re-buried at the site.

Since the Roman soldiers aren’t here to defend themselves, let me be the first to say: this is obviously a case of suicide, or possibly resisting arrest!

Now, for the first time, we have an indication of how the Roman armies treated people,
FOR THE FIRST TIME? Anyone who has read any Roman history knows the body counts were huge in those battles and situations. Both sides was VERY brutal , executions and the wiping out of entire populations was not uncommon . This is NOT big news

“She was killed by a Roman sword stabbing her in the back of the head,”

It could have been a Roman doctor practicing his late-term abortion skills.

“Some invading armies may have been worse than others but none were gentle.”

This is why I propose the next time we invade a country, we light some candles and put on a good Barry White album!

Were Roman soldiers the only people who had swords in those days?

Yes. Sword control was a big agenda item with Julius Caesar. There was no II Amendment under the Romans.

I noticed that, too. I hope this expert is referring to ancient times, as US forces and WWII European forces do not fit this description.

Maybe I should add that although the Roman armies were ruthless, they brought with them the Pax Romana.

That sounds ironic, but it’s not. The areas they conquered, even Greece, were filled with tribal warfare—people constantly killing and looting each other. That was certainly true in Britain.

After the Roman conquest, the barbarians were forced to find other things to do, for the most part. The Greeks were not allowed to raid each others’ cities, the British were not allowed to burn down farms and steal cattle, and so forth.

This article reads like a 3rd grade essay in political correctness. (Like almost all news articles these days.)

Amazing how positive these people can be about their deduced facts.

All they can tell is that she was killed by a blade whose point produces a hole similar to what would be produced by the type of blade used by Roman soldiers. Were Roman soldiers the only people who had swords in those days?

As Charlie Chan would say, "other possibility ... ."

Those were liberating forces. Did the Nazi forces fit the description?

“Maybe she sold out her people and they executed her.”

Or maybe she was nutty and charged backwards at the soldiers while holding a spear. There are lots of cases of the mentally imbalanced committing “suicide by Roman soldier”, ya know?

"Many people have a romantic view of the Roman invasion, Dr Wilkinson said."

In the UK, with help from southwestern European propaganda, yes (goes back to Rome's ancient information tactics).
