Minister of State for Antiquities Affairs Zahi Hawass has been sentenced to one year in jail on Sunday for refusing to fulfill a court ruling over a land dispute.
The Egyptian criminal court also said Hawass must be relieved of his governmental duties and ordered him to pay a LE1000 penalty.
Hawass failed to adhere to a ruling in favour of his opponent over a land dispute when he was in charge of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA).
The SCA appealed the court ruling, arguing that the land includes monuments and therefore should be treated as government-owned land.
Hawass was recently re-appointed as antiquities chief in the newly-formed cabinet of Prime Minister Essam Sharaf.

I’ve seen this guy on television several times. He’s a total ass.
He doesn’t have a humble bone in his body. He needs someone to deck him in the face. The man is a bully and nothing more.
I’m in for $10—January 13, 2012.
Yep.
Agreed.
Heh... A couple of years ago he initiated a series of books on ancient Egypt for Egyptian schoolkids, and I figured someone would bump him off for that. So, no bet. ;’)
As much as I don’t care for his antics, I have to agree with Pan_Yan. Among his antics are his categorical rejection of radiometric dating — but only in Egypt — because significant findings have destroyed the basis for the conventional pseudochronology. I want to see cosmic ray exposure dating of the Abu Simbel temples, which are incontrovertibly the product of Ramses II.
Paging Art Bell!!
At least he understands the value of Egypt's ancient heritage and has not taken the Taliban approach to Bamiyan valley. It may be for the money and the fame, but that is a start.
You can say what you want but one thing about Zahi is that he is passionate about his work and had been a good guardian of Egypt’s heritage and treasures.
Yeah, but that was before they got all democrazyeyed.
But I see your point (cheapskate). By next year, that ten bucks is going to get you that extra gallon of gas.
Absolutely. But I also agree that he is an ass.
Yeah, but you'll still have your shoe collection...
Well, it looks like the lunatics HAVE taken over the asylum.
Islam should be totally extirpated everywhere it exists by whatever means possible.
***** “ extirpated “ *****
I have never seen this word before ... so I looked it up and by golly it is the perfect word for your sentence which I will repeat for a bump ....
“Islam should be totally extirpated everywhere it exists by whatever means possible.”
TT
LOL!
If I had to guess, this lawsuit mentioned pertains to Zahi’s use of something like eminent domain (expropriation) to move an entire village off a site he wanted to excavate.
