Texas Instruments TI-85 says:
48÷2(9+3) = 2
But Texas Instruments TI-86 says:
48÷2(9+3) = 288
I've never seen that anywhere. There is no rule of precedence I am aware of that extends the parenthetical precedence outside the parenthesis.
Can you provide a citation to support this assertion? All of the searches I have done don't mention it.
I agree that 2(9+3) is a shortened form of 2*(9+3), but I disagree that it implies parenthesis around the multiplication.
‘Supercede’ is spelled correctly, but the answer is still 288. :P
Really; and your source for this opinion is?
**I suspect those who think the answer is 288 are far younger than those of us who know the answer is 2.**
AGREED ... (runs for cover)
I read that in the Physics forum, however, the vote was pretty evenly split. One convencing arguement I read was that the format was flawed by using the division sign instead of the slash (/) sign. That division indicates you proceed with the left to right rule and the answer is 288. Otherwise, if the slash was used, I would agree the answer is 2.
That 2(9+3) really does mean that 2*(9+3) must go first!
We computer guys aren't allowed to imply operators, but the old math rules should apply.
The horizontal line is the archaic notation for parenthesis in modern form. You have inserted a set of parens where they did not exist before. ;-P
288 obviously.
in 48/2(9+3) the parenthesis are used to force the evaluation of the addition prior to the left-to-right evaluation of the rest of the equation. Unless you can show a rule written somewhere that forces the lack of the multiplication operator symbol into meaning implied parenthesis, the answer is 288.
I'm in my mid-forties, and I know it's 288. You? :P
terms inside brackets & parentheses
exponents and roots
multiplication and division
addition and subtraction
The parentheses rule does NOT apply to numbers outside the parentheses.
Calculations at the same operations level must be worked left-to-right. Thus, the correct answer is 288.
NO MORT YOU ARE WRONG ... it is an archaic form of the DIVIDED BY sign. Besides
2(9+3) is distributive principle learned in 4th grade
2*9+2*3 NOW muliply first is accurate
18+6=24
now 48Divided by 24 =2
The use of a division sign or a slash makes absolutely no difference; you divide the number prior to the slash or divide sign by what follows; and do your multiplication prior to the division.
It actually doesn’t make any difference, but mistakes will be minimized if you do.
10, if you know binary, of course.
Try this:
48
______________ = 2
2(9+3)
2 is correct........
binary....what the hell is that
Search for the term “mathematical precedence” and take your pick of sources.
Older than you and I had a minor in math in college. I learned this stuff in third grade; it’s not that difficult.
Ahah! I see the glitch! I'm been programming for so long that I forgot the rules of pencil & paper math. If you MUST automatically add the forgotten "*", you'll change to left-to-right parsing of that dang compiler. The old math teachers never dueled with a compiler.
Binary is a 2-based numbering system, and is the basic numbering system used by digital computers.
