Texas Instruments TI-85 says:
48÷2(9+3) = 2
But Texas Instruments TI-86 says:
48÷2(9+3) = 288
2.... math eggheads would solve the juxtaposed 2(9+3) first. Another way to express this would be (2(9)+2(3)).

That is correct, so then they MUST be performed from left to right.
It’s only the INSIDE of parenthesis that get precedence, not the outside.
The equation is 48/2(9+3).
Evaluate the parenthesis first.
48/2*12
This equation is equivalent to:
48*1/2*12=48*0.5*12
NOTE: The original eq. is ≠ to:48/(2*12)
Multiplication and division have equivalent prevalence. The division operator acts on the multiplicand it procedes to produce the multiplicative inverse. ie. in this case "/2" = *1/2 = *0.5.
How old are you?
;)
I love Java. It puts the Corn flakes on the table.
Nope, operators with equal precedence MUST be performed from left to right. You cannot arbitrarily use parenthesis that were not already there.
Are you a liberal-in-training???
Administrator, please ZOT this - it may give the libs an idea they haven’t thought of.
I’ve never seen a rule that extended the parenthetical precedence outside the parenthesis.
If you did not like that one....what is 1 + 1?
Yes it is. How old are you?
Not according to my dear aunt Sally.
You are correct - as I pointed out, the distributive property of multiplication dictates that this is true, since 2(9+3) = (2(9)+2(3))=24
So, then you would have to finish the equation starting from the left.. get the answer.. then multiply the answer from the ()
LOL, don't know what to say on this one. I was taught that you cannot divide by a number that hasn't be equated first. This could be variations in the decades so to speak.
As I read the equation, the 2(9+3) is the entire equation that must be solved prior to moving back left to right. That 2(9+3) is the "other" number.
I'll go dig out my old algebra teachers' names and we can ask, if they are still alive. :-)
Post 135 explains why much better than I did
<><><>If you did not like that one....what is 1 + 1?
Whatever the highest bidder who’s payment clears wants it to be :)
Sorry, but PRE calculator, the equation is thus..
_____48____
2(9+3) =
I suspect those who think the answer is 288 are far younger than those of us who know the answer is 2.
