When you see all that agricultural terracing, you have to ask what happened to the large population that needed it? It’s harder to explain why they felt the need to construct terraces above the snow line.

I started looking at those a few years ago on Google earth. To say it’s fascinating is like calling the sun “large”. The entire area for hundreds of square miles and into the jungles where it continues because you can still see the lines in the rivers...

Imagine if you will, Los Angelese viewed from the air after a few H bombs detonate above it would look like. Nothing left but the outlines of roads and waterways, ditches and earthworks.

Sort of like a giant flood came and washed everything away... Naw...

To see more in this area, look up Atlantis, Bolivia. Somewhere down there is the remains of some pretty startling structures as well. Like giant lego blocks only extremely intricate and edges that are still razor sharp.

Remember those alien runways, monkeys and spiders drawn on the desert floor that drew such a pizazz back in the 70s? That’s just a tiny bity corner of all the amazing stuff down there.

That is raised bed, irrigation farming. It is to cold to grow food there without raising the beds, the irrigation water acquires heat in the daytime and warms the beds during the colder nights.

This farming was probably done by these people:

Years ago, I think I may have seen a show about this on TV. Only remember it being in S. America and the archaeologist walking around and explaining raised bed agriculture, post #11 by blam.

They call it 'Waru Waru' cultivation.

S. America, especially the Andean region, has a long and involved history that hasn't yet been begun to be unraveled.

All we think of is the Inca, who didn't even start their rise to power till about 1450.

I highly recommend the book 1491, a discussion of the pre-Columbus history of the Americas. Large areas of the continent that we assume were largely uninhabited prior to the arrival of the white man actually supported massive populations, including much of the Amazon.

These civilizations were wiped out by the epidemics created when the American and Afro-Eurasian disease ecosystems merged, reducing the population of the western hemisphere by 1600 by possibly over 90%.

While it is a novel, I have always wondered IF this is the reason for mass migrations/extinctions over the eons on earth? The HAB Theory:

This photo looks to be retouched (imho).

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the darkened areas seem to form a pattern (looks like a guy on a motorcycle to me). They were darkened specificly to make them jump out and form an impression.

If you step back and look at the entire picture, you can see several “images” (there is at least one clear human head, as well as a large hand).

As someome pointed out, there patterns are the result of what has been a common farming technique in the area for centuries.

IMHO, this is no different that looking at clouds. Look up at the clouds, and you’ll see all kinds of images Some people used to think this was proof that God existed, because he put images in the clouds. The truth is it is the result of coincidence and human imagination.

Look at any google shot of neighborhood streets, and you’ll have the same effect. You’ll see images in the street patterns.

Humans look for patterns in everything. These patterns in the farming rows are just due to human imagination, nothing more.

I would also recommend “The Lost City of Z” by David Grann.

It covers the story of Percy Fawcett and his exploration of the Amazon. It also deals with new discoveries about the folks that lived all over the Amazon Basin.

AS for the rest, we know there were many ancient civilizations all over the Andes region until the peaceful Incas ‘encouraged’ them to join the empire.
