They are VERY scary. We have them all around us every summer but the last one actually in our town was massive. I came home from work (hubby was at work) and packed up everything that could never be replaced (pictures, the kids baby books, school yearbooks, hubbys Marine stuff, etc.) and they sat at the door ready to go if necessary.
Thanks to many wonderful fire districts, it wasn't necessary! :)

Down here in the valley on fairly clear days we can see the smoke clouds forming up in the foothills.
A few years aqo, we went up to LaPine, OR for my BIL's wedding held in a state park. A deputy came down to our location and told us we had to leave the park. A forest fire was burning about two miles away. Once back at the motel, we could see the smoke plumes.
Here's a pic from that fire. Didn't even have to zoom in the scene with the camera.
This shot was take at the beginning of the fire. Burned a few thousand acres as I remember.
