iPad users, do you miss word docs and excel? [vanity]

Posted on 03/26/2011 1:35:50 PM PDT by stuck_in_new_orleans

I'd like to own a iPad but I use word and excel files quite a bit for work. From what I can tell, from using the ipad in the Apple store, Word/Excel/PowerPoint files won't work on a iPad. Is this true?

If not, how do you get around this limitation?

does the ipad have capitable programs that can easily convert between MS office and ipad files?

Why for the life of me do I need I-Pad.

Cause then you would be kool. Without it you can never get there.

The iPad should include basic programs like this. Hate that part. Would love to run open office.

Also hate the inability to print ( without paying $10 for an app)

Also hate the inability to run flash.....this isn’t where my files are stored, so I am okay with running flash. Why prevent me from doing so.

The iPad is nice, but not nearly as nice as it could be.

I have an iPad. I use it to read books, and check the weather. I have found it inferior to my laptop for general use and inferior to my phone for mobile use though.
Just my humble opinion.

I’m working on a project to get an excel application running on an iPad. It’s not going to work. We are going to recommend a Windows based tablet.

I have high speed Internet at home. I have a very powerful laptop. I have high speed Internet at work with a laptop and desktop- both the latest and greatest. I have a 40" LCD HD TV and cable with more channels than I could ever look at. I have a cell phone on me all the time. I'm in constant communication all the time. I'm not in sales with my work. I have top notch Digital Camera and DVR. I have Navigation System in my Car (which I almost never need).

Why for the life of me do I need I-Pad. I've seen people with them and they only seem to be playing games and such. I need some time just to be free of technology like driving to work and such. What would someone like me benefit from by having an I-Pad or even a more powerful smart phone? What's the advantage of this?

That's a tall order so I'll try to answer. First, I don't have an Ipad, but I bought my wife one this morning from a guy who who has an Ipad2 on order. In her case, it has a lot of specialized apps that are applicable to her field in medicine.

I myself have a Galaxy Tab, which I love. The reason I have it, and the reason I chose it over an Ipad, is that it's my reading device. I carry around several hundred books, news papers etc, all in one place. It's the perfect size for reading whereas the Ipad is the perfect size for web browsing.

The smart phone on the other hand consolidates several devices that I used to own. I passed my Tom-Tom on to my daughter, my Ipod to my son, and I no longer carry a pocket camera mountain biking. Seriously, how can you beat that? One device navigates, plays music at the gym or on the bike, takes decent snapshots, shoots HD video and makes phone calls. It's replaced everything except my bulky digital SLR.

You are right — they are excellent for drawing up files, and making quick notations. Just hard to write long things on.

I got the camera connector kit for my iPad. When I was in DC for the Restoring Honor rally, I took many pictures with the DSLR. On the walk back to the hotel, we stopped for lunch, while we were waiting for the food to arrive, I whipped the iPad out of the camera bag, connected the camera, and it immediately read the card, thumb nailed all the pictures, allowing me to review them full screen, mark them for importation, after which it deleted the card readying it for another round of shooting.

Drinks after lunch allowed the pad to passed around the table for others to view the pics of the day, as well as other pics I had on it.

Eye-Fi makes a WiFi enabled SD card that can upload pics to the pad as they’re taken. It’s pretty cool!

The iPad is just another tool. You can use it just for games, or you can use it for other things.

I can’t wait until the Galaxy Tab 10.1 comes out in June. Same price point as iPad and far more features- and Android. :)

Indeed...as a physician, I use Practice Fusion which is an off-site server-based electronic medical record application (free, as a matter of fact). I have used it for 6 months on my pc, and about one month ago they made the system compatible with iPads. I now await my iPad 2 (I ordered it 2 weeks ago at Best Buy since I REFUSE to walk into an Apple Store and be condescended to by some 20-something twit).

Then you've never been in an Apple store. You won't be "condescended to" at all. You will be surprised at wonderful service you get... With no pressure to buy what you don't need.

You mistakenly thought the Original Poster was trying to sell you on an iPad. Don’t click on threads that have the word iPad in them so you can avoid becoming distraught.

My Apple store has several grey hairs. I am even going to give them a shout out by name when I review the Glendale, CA Apple store.

I may even apply for a job there when I retire [very soon].

"There are a lot of ipad fan boys here and I’ll get a clear answer faster here."

Do you usually expect to get gratis help by first insulting those from whom you seek help?

~~~~~~~~~
Fortunately for you, many FReepers on Swordmaker's ping list are good folks who are able (uniike the FReepers who come on Apple threads to disparage Apple users -- like you) to rise above the pettiness and be charitably helpful. So... you will probably get some helpful (or at least, honest,) answers to your query -- even though you have shown yourself to be undeserving of the same.
Does that mean that I consider "Apple fanboys (and girls)" to be superior? No, but, it does means that I consider trolls -- of any persuasion -- to be inferior...
There is an old adage about "flies" and" honey"... Heed it next time.
It sounds like your advantage is that you can choose not to buy an iPad -- and be comfortable with your decision. Or... you might try one, and find a convenience that you would enjoy having.
It's is nice to encounter folks who are satisfied with their lot in life! :-)
Full disclosure: I don't have an iPad either -- but if someone would show me a high-quality GIS-cartographic program capable of producing a continuous, real-time GPS track overlay atop a high quality topo map or Google Earth image -- I probably would get one for use in the field doing (as I did today) survey archaeology.
IOW, if you have a need that it meets -- go for it! Otherwise, be happy! ;-)
