iPad users, do you miss word docs and excel? [vanity]

I'd like to own a iPad but I use word and excel files quite a bit for work. From what I can tell, from using the ipad in the Apple store, Word/Excel/PowerPoint files won't work on a iPad. Is this true?

If not, how do you get around this limitation?

does the ipad have capitable programs that can easily convert between MS office and ipad files?

I don’t know the answer to your question but I have a question for you. Why didn’t you ask the people at the store or get on the MS web site and try to find out?

Documents to Go has an IPAD application.

Not an iPad user, but I did some checking to see if OpenOffice would work for you. Here’s the OpenOffice response to an inquiry about whether it will be available on iPad:

“I am not sure this will be possible for the simple reason that as opposed to
the MacBook which is more of an open platform, the ipad will have an
extremely closed operating system (Iphone OS) which doesnt make it possible
to load different languages or applications like the one we use.

Recoding OOo in Objective-C would be prohibited and since it seems that the
apps are managed by Apple, it could make little business sense to allow a
third party (and free) competing product like ours.

However just like the iphone, there are solutions like remote desktop that
allow to access an Open environment such a Linux desktop over the web. (look
on the history of this list for OpenOffice.org Online).

Again there could be ‘jailbreaks’ that will make the ipad run Linux and in
that case OOo would be doable on an ipad but of course it will inherit all
the issues from breaking warranty and support and such.”

iWork has Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. I like using Pages and Keynote better than Word and Powerpoint, but Excel is still far ahead of Numbers. I don’t have an iPad, so am only familiar with the Mac programs. I do not know how well these programs work on the iPad in converting, and I do have trouble converting Excel spreadsheets to Numbers.

Look into DataViz for Ipad. I used the product on a palm device I used. Works well . I used the excel translation the most on the palm.

Thanks. I def don’t want to rig up something. I’ll be transferig files to employees and the files will need to be opened on both ends (PC and ipad).

I don’t know the answer, but if you could put Apple’s work programs like Pages and Numbers onto an iPad, then you can convert them back and forth from Windows programs, I would think - you can on a Mac.

Anyway, iPads are fun but not for heavy working or writing. They are more for internet, games, reading, and other fun stuff on the go. If you intend to do more than just reading the work docs, I’d go with a Mac Book Air. I adore my iPad but it’s just not a work machine.

Anyway, iPads are fun but not for heavy working or writing. They are more for internet, games, reading, and other fun stuff on the go. If you intend to do more than just reading the work docs, I’d go with a Mac Book Air. I adore my iPad but it’s just not a work machine.

On the contrary, there are a very large number of people using their iPads for work. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, investment bankers......those are just the Freepers I can think of at the moment who have checked in that they are using an iPad on the job.

The medical group my primary care physician is part of got tired of carrying around open laptops in the office, and now they carry iPads when they see patients.
