THE HAGUE, Netherlands The Dutch navy says it has discovered the sunken wreck of a German World War I submarine off the island of Terschelling and will designate it a war grave.
The submarine was first discovered in October 2009, but the find was only announced Wednesday after the Dutch Defense Ministry authorities confirmed its identity with German authorities.
The Dutch navy initially believed the wreck was a Dutch submarine, 0-13, that went missing during World War II, but divers and remote cameras later confirmed it was the U-106.

Young men of a distant era, still on “eternal patrol”.
GGG PING!
World War ONE?
In doing a search I found there were two U-boats with the designation of U-106. The one the Dutch found from WWI and another one that had a successful career during WWII.
This particular 106 was an 093 type. The boat number was 106, not to be confused with the type.
7 Oct 1917 - Lost in a new minefield off Heligoland when homeward bound. 41 dead (all hands lost).
You can check O-13’s operational history at http://www.dutchsubmarines.com/
Right. The search came up with those two boats when I used “Submarine U-106” - I didn’t want to post all that wordage here but let those that are interested search it for themselves.
Why does the new German navy use glass bottom ships?
So they can see the old German Navy!!
Don't LOL too hard. Seventeenth-Century Dutch seapower was very much a 'kick a-- and take names' operation. The Netherlands didn't end up with big chunks of Indonesia by staying bashfully at home.
A ship and her hands are lost fighting against overwhelming odds.
Germany, Holland; it's all the same to you, right?
You’re wound awfully tight, maybe you should switch to de-caf
Now, I’m not one to dance on any watery graves here and do have a healthy respect for the sailors and their sacrifice no matter what the country (almost). But, am I missing something here? In World War I, the Dutch were desperately trying to remain neutral. And this was a German U-Boat (bad guys) found in Dutch waters, correct? Yes, admittedly, I am surprised to find out that the Germans did have a couple of U-Boats in the first world war, I never knew that before, and therefore I was very interested in the story. But I’m not sure what the Dutch fighting Germany in 1940 has to do World War I and with NWFLConservative’s healthy um... “respect” ;-) for the Germans.
My apologies, I missed the point that the boat could have possibly been another “Dutch” boat that they were looking for therefore, without your referencing that issue in your response to NWFLConservative’s post, I got totally lost as well.
And we’re walking... we’re walking... ;-)
Yeah, it could be that. Or it could be the liquor.
