Windows media doesn’t play Mp4, download Real player or itunes and they will not only play them but you can convert to Mp3.

Download VLC instead. Plays everything with built-in codecs. BUT if you still want to stick with WMP, download CCCP or K-LITE codec pack, open and make sure you you turn the WMP as your default player so K LITE will recognize it quickly.

Simply, MP4 is a file format such as AVI which is a multi-container format. MP4 is also my favorite format: de-facto container for H264 hi-definition H264 file format which is also used in Blu ray.

(what do I know..I work in Hollywood)

You’re going to have to convert them to play them on the Windows Media Player. They’ll play with Quicktime. I convert them to wmv. with the YouTube downloader application.

Search for and download the VLC media player, and you’re good to go. Also plays videos that your Windows Media Player can’t play.

MP3 = Music

MP4 = Video

Media player can play MP4 files, all you need to do is down load the proper codecs.

The easiest way to get Windows to play MP4 is to switch to Quicktime.

MP4 is actually a container file format. The mp4 file typically contains other files (or "streams") for video and audio. It may also contain subtitle information etc. There are just a couple of common formats for the video and audio streams inside an mp4, but in theory you could use just about any format you want in what's called a private stream inside the file. Of course, that's not much good/help if you can't find player software to decode it, so it is best to stick with the usual/standard formats for video/audio within the mp4.

That's the long-winded techie version. The short version is it is a digital movie with sound.

The short answer: mp3 is audio and can be played on numerous players and your pc. Mp4 is video with audio for movies, and can be played on players such as ipod that have video capabilities, or on your computer with itunes or quicktime software.

I am a computer hardware engineer, though this is not my area, I admit. Be that as it may, as I understand, MP4 requires iPad2, USB 3.0 and Windows 8 to run.
