Live Stream of the Iron Dog Start!
Go Team #11! Go First Dude!
For those of us puzzled by what is going on in Nome, I decided to peruse the rules (funny how that helps, kinda like reading the instructions) and I learned a few things.
The Nome layover for the Pro Class (which Todd is) is 24 - 40 hours long.
The restart will begin Thursday at 0800 Alaska time (that is 1100CST).
The first five teams will be released with the same split times that they arrived in Nome. Thus, Palin and Quam will go second, three minutes and seventeen seconds after McKenna and Van Meter.
The teams are released in groups of five with breaks of varying length between groupings.
All racers and officials are required to attend the Nome Halfway Banquet. This follows a mandantory driver’s meeting.
One more rule of note, there will be a mandantory layover prior to Saturday in order to guarantee a daylight finish to the race in Fairbanks.
THUDD!!!!
Is that Sarah greeting Todd?
THUDDDDDDDD!
Cool pics.
I’ve long been a race fan, but finally entered the competitive ring this past summer. I tell you, racing is damn hard. The vehicles and motors don’t know it is a race, it’s all up the the crew and driver.
Hats off to Mr. Palin and Quam.
That is quite the race. I was on a job in Tok, Alaska. It is right on the eastern border of Alaska on the road that heads east out of Fairbanks.
I had to take a photo with the mountains in the backround and the mile marker in the foreground. Mile marker 1368! (I’m guessing that is from Nome?)
21, yes, those pictures are from Nome. I swiped them from the Iron Dog site. I like warmth.
I’ve been following on Twitter. (@irondograce)
Something else to note, Todd is in hos 40’s. He’s entered the stage of competition where brains have more value than brawn. I’m 50, so I love that!
Are you talking about Papua, New Guinea? Thanks for the info and pictures.
Sorta. Same island, but different country. The island of New Guinea is split north to south. The western half is Papua, Indonesia and that is where I live sometimes.
We have some friends (a couple w/children), Amos & Marilyn, who are black missionaries from Papua New Guinea. One of our churches supports them and they spend a lot of time here.
Here's one of Todd and his partner Eric Quam in the garage in Nome.
The race to the finbish will mostly be over a very fast track. They'll be retracing all the way back to Ruby on the Yukon and further up the river towards Fairbanks. Speeds will be high.
That is so cool. Is the US their mission field or are they here to get linguistic or other similar training before going back to PNG? Hubby and I are teachers sent out by Wycliffe and are supported by many like-minded believers.
Thanks for the info. Are you there?
I remember from time to time that you are in Ala., my home state (sort of). I was born just across the line in Lincoln Co. TN and grew up in Huntsville, AL.
That makes sense to me. I admire them. I think perhaps it is harder for them to leave their families than it is for us.
During our 1999 - 2000 furlough, we lived in Taft and shopped at the BiLo in Fayetteville.
Thank you so much for the photos
Thank you again for the race breakdown.....
Go Todd Go...
You are welcome. I’m probably not going to keep up with the race for the rest of the time. I have a conference this weekend and I may not have internet time. But I’m glad to have done the little bit that I did.
