On Sunday, 31st January 2011 Dr. Zahi Hawass was appointed to the post of Minister of Antiquities, heading a newly created department that will be charged with the care and protection of all Egyptian monuments and museums. This department will absorb the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
...Hawass[:] The commanders of the army are now protecting the Egyptian Museum, Cairo, and all of the major sites of Egypt (Luxor, Aswan, Saqqara, and the pyramids of Giza) are safe. The twenty-four museums in Egypt, including the Coptic and Islamic museums in Cairo, are all safe, as well. I would like to say that I am very happy to see that the Egyptian people, young and old, stood as one person against the escaped prisoners to protect monuments all over the country. The monuments are safe because of both the army and the ordinary people. In 2010 Dr. Hawass was installed as the Vice Minister for Culture so he might postpone his mandatory retirement as the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities...
Some foreigners think Egypt is not interested in protecting our monuments and museums, but that is not true, at all. Egypt has 5,000 years of civilisation, and we love our heritage. I want to send a message to the people of Egypt: all of you are responsible, to ultimately be judged by your own history, to protect your monuments, and should not permit ignorance or outlaws to damage our history -- it is the most important thing we own. I am sure the bells from the churches are ringing now, and the voices from the minarets of mosques are calling, to say that Egypt is a safe place to live. We all believe Egypt will be safe."

He had too much power as it was.
We get a kick out of watching Zahi. He’s rather amusing.
Well, he’d better get over to the museum. I understand that it is on fire.
i enjoy the shows he is in, but he comes off as “no one is as good as an Egyptian”
He covers up all the findings pointing to aliens...
Hawass is a problem simply because his views are the only ones that are acceptable. Kind of like global warming.
No doubt he’s a brilliant man. Unfortunately he’s also arrogant and I suspect racist.
You are correct.
He is an impediment to any real Archaeology due to his Egypto-centric philosophy.
i think he is a racist too. i have heard him on a few of the discovery and history channel shows he’s featured in, say some pretty nasty things about others and their views/findings/translations
I crack my wife up with my Zahi Hawass impression just by saying “pyramid pyramid pyramid” using his accent. I actually met him once, back in the 80’s when I was on a museum council for egyptology. He was the same guy - very focused and ambitious, a smoothie with sharp elbows.
Oh no!!! his ego is so big already he had to quit wearing his hat. Did you ever see him when he loses his temper? LOL it’s not pretty. (and he knows the cameras are running but just don’t give a damn)
It’s a sure sign the regime plans to hang on.

Now that was a surprising choice. /s lol
I always thought he comes off as “no one is as good as Zahi Hawass.”
Careful, Jim. The Free Republic Anthropocentric Historical Orthodoxy posse might hear about this and chastise you mercilessly... /g
Merciless chastising belongs in “chat”.
