Of Weeping And Rejoicing
February 9, 2011

Golda Meir knew both struggle and success during her life. As prime minister of Israel, she experienced many episodes of conflict and loss, as well as the periodic joy of successes and victory in the life of the fledgling State of Israel. She said of joy and sorrow, “Those who don’t know how to weep with their whole heart, don’t know how to laugh either.”

The apostle Paul called us to a life of both weeping and rejoicing—but with a twist. In Romans 12:15, the apostle challenged us to look outside our own experiences to the needs of others. He said, “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.”

If we rejoice only in our own victories, we miss the wonder of celebrating the power of the Lord, who desires to accomplish His purposes in and through others as well. If we mourn only our own losses, we lose the opportunity to “be there” for those who are hurting by showing them compassion.

Life is filled with the extremes of joy and sorrow, victory and defeat. But we have been given the privilege of entering into those moments in people’s lives to see the grace of God at work. Don’t miss it!

Lord, give me sensitivity
To people in their grief and pain,
To weep with them and show Your love
In ways mere words cannot attain. —Sper

Looking to the needs of others honors Christ.

Read: Romans 12:9-16

Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. —Romans 12:15

Maybe they are related! Both of orange...I love orange cats. My son says there is a big orange cat coming up on his deck now to see Sassy. Sassy is all fixed up, so I hope he just wants to play....LOL! Sassy acts like she doesn’t like this cat coming there, I guess she’s jealous!

This is the orange cat that visits Sassy. The color is not too good in this picture and I noticed a flash in the picture. I think the orange cat is pretty. She just wants a playmate.

Jesus introduced the ministry of the Holy Spirit to His disciples before His death. They had come to depend on Jesus for everything, and when He announced that He was leaving them, they felt abandoned. Jesus would not be with them to answer their questions, to teach them or to offer solutions to the challenges of their daily lives. They had come to love Him deeply and His absence would be keenly felt.

Jesus gave them this reassurance: "And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Helper that He may abide with you forever ... I will not leave you as orphans. I will come to you" (John 14:18). The disciples would not be orphaned; in fact, thanks to the gift of the Spirit, Jesus in effect promised, "I'll be closer to you than I've ever been before." That promise was fulfilled by the gift of the Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity.

What is your need today? Is it for companionship? The Holy Spirit is with you. Is it for comfort? The Holy Spirit stands ready to help. Do you need an advocate? He is ready to plead your case. And, if your sorrow is so deep that you do not know how to pray, the Holy Spirit will intercede with groaning that is too deep for words (Romans 8:26).

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the promise that You are always with us through the presence of the Holy Spirit. Teach us to rely on Your presence when we feel lonely or discouraged. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

They are very sweet together. Barry thinks Sassy is jealous ‘cause she’s the Queen of that Castle. The lady who Barry works with gave the cat to him and they had kept her outside 24 hours a day. And she had other cats, too. Since Sassy came to live with my son, she’s in all the time, except when he lets her out in the evenings. I guess she doesn’t want to chance that the orange cat would live there in “her” house...LOL!
