I need to buy a new washer/dryer set. Which is better? Top or front load?

Modern front loaders adjust the water level to the size of the load. So you add just a little detergent, also, to do a small load. Besides, you can just pull the laundry out into a basket, or else pull it out and toss it straight into the dryer, without a lot of standing/stooping/standing, etc.
Front loading washers use less water.
Google mildew issues for front load. apparently they don’t drain as well, and can get musty...
Top gas if you have gas. Only way to go in my book. Much cheaper to operate almost everywhere in the U.S.

Yes, and I hate it! I wish I had my top loading back. Plus, the shaking while spinning drives me crazy.

there is no control with a front loader..!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Hate that..I will always have a top loader..that way if I forgot a sock, I can throw it in!!
Or for gentle clothes, I can run it 2 minutes and then take the sweaters out before the spin cycle twists them 2 sizes smaller!

Also, if a front loader is placed on an ‘unstable floor’ (read NOT a concrete slab) then you may have quite a shimmy in nearby rooms.
We have a Whirlpool Front loaders are inherently dynamically unstable. Typically they add a 100 pound slab of concrete to diminish the shaking issue. Not so, at least not for years. It's been 15 years since they used weights in washers and the weight problem was only with the old Frigidaire combo (very heavy) front loader, not made since the 70's. The only washer I know of that used concrete blocks was the GE top loaders made up until about 15 years ago. Excessive vibration because of bad floors happens in top loaders as well as front loaders. I do recall not being able to sell that old Frig combo to customers living in moble homes, that was one heavy washer/dryer. Not the case with new front loaders.
Good luck with the Cabrio, it and the similar Kenmore model has experienced a higher than average repair ratio.
The only problem I have with my front loader is that when you start the load there’s no going back. No more finding one last thing to toss into the laundry just after it starts.
We switched to a front load and cut our water bill by 1/3. Top loaders are water hogs — or were.
Top loads have worked well in the 60 years since!!!!

If you can get gas, get it. I assume you had a plumber check it out.
I have gas in my house but not enough flow for a dryer.
Gas is super fast but hard on clothes. Keep the lint from building up or you might get a fire.
Gas will really cut your electric bill if you do alot of clothes

We may have the same set as ours has been working for 24 too. Our neighbor has gone through three since we purchased ours but Sears changed their manufacturer - low bidder.

Go to a sears outlet and get a brand new one for a little over half the cost of a new one. I got the Electrolux model front loader. They had a little nick and slight dent in one and a scratch on the plastic door on the other.
