PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A team of divers say they've discovered the remains of the USS Revenge, a ship commanded by U.S. Navy hero Oliver Hazard Perry and wrecked off Rhode Island in 1811.
Perry is known for defeating the British in the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie off the shores of Ohio, Michigan and Ontario in the War of 1812 and for the line "I have met the enemy and they are ours." His battle flag bore the phrase "Don't give up the ship," and to this day is a symbol of the Navy.

Perry's Victory, painted by William Henry Powell of Cincinnati in 1865, illustrates Oliver Hazard Perry's decisive victory over the British fleet in the Battle of Lake Erie (September 10, 1813). This victory ensured American control of the Great Lakes. The painting is currently hanging in the rotunda of the Ohio Statehouse.
Who said “Don’t give up the ship”? What happened afer he said it?

Pretty neat story, though. American history is still being revealed.
CPT James Lawrence, USS CHESAPEAKE, spoken as he lay dying during the engagement with the HMS SHANNON. The CHESAPEAKE surrendered.
It's too bad that Arnold later changed sides ... one reason being that Congress wouldn't reimburse his expenses in that battle ... Arnold's records went down with his ship in Valcour Bay ... It was Congress that ultimately led him to treason.
Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry at the Battle of Lake Erie, September 10, 1813, one of the few major victories won by American forces in the War of 1812. (U.S. Navy)
I suppose it was the same ambition that ultimately got him into trouble.
Nice Package!
