Benedict Arnold's small "fleet" turned back a British invasion fleet in the battle of Valcour Island on October 11, 1776, on Lake Champlain. Ref. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Valcour_Island

It's too bad that Arnold later changed sides ... one reason being that Congress wouldn't reimburse his expenses in that battle ... Arnold's records went down with his ship in Valcour Bay ... It was Congress that ultimately led him to treason.

It was too bad... its hard not to sympathize with him at the Battle for Saratoga.

I suppose it was the same ambition that ultimately got him into trouble.
