Little Ice Age Is Coming
Newsmax ^ | 12/30/2010 | Lowell Ponte

Posted on 12/30/2010 10:21:23 AM PST by Signalman

The record-breaking snowfall and cold that hit the Northeast in December 2010 forced cancellation of 5,000 airline flights and one NFL football game, prompted six states to declare states of emergency, and left nearly 55 percent of the U.S landmass covered in snow.

to enter and exit their homes from third-story windows.

The year 1816 was called the year without summer because in the Northeast snow remained year-round in the shade of rocks and trees. It was apparently caused by the added chill of high-altitude volcanic ash circling and shading the Earth, happened during what today we call the little ice age that gripped the Northern Hemisphere from around 1400 A.D. until around 1850 A.D.

From America's Revolutionary War we have records of British soldiers dragging heavy cannons across the thick ice from Staten Island to Brooklyn.

During this era the harbors in Boston, New York City, Baltimore, and Philadelphia repeatedly froze shut in winter. The winter at Valley Forge was far more severe than those today.

We may be sliding back into a little ice age, as I argued long ago in my book "The Cooling." A bit of global warming might supply the atmospheric moisture that could make such a rapid return to Earth's normal colder ice climate happen.

But you would never know this listening to global warming advocates, who in recent days have proclaimed that global warming is the cause of the record-shattering cold and snow in the Northeast, Great Britain, and much of Europe.

A Dec. 22 editorial in Investor's Business Daily (IBD) put its finger precisely on the fallacy in such thinking. As philosopher of science Karl Popper observed, to be valid science a claim must be "falsifiable," testable in a way that can prove it wrong.

All I know is that my furnace is out and this morning it was 54 degrees inside my house. Granted, there are lots of places colder than this, but this is in San Jose, CA!

Based on how cold the last three winters have been here, I can more easily believe in a cooling Earth than a warming Earth (but I'm beginning to wish for the latter).

This cooling has already killed hundreds of thousands of people. If it continues and no strong action is taken, it will cause world famine, world chaos and world war, and this could all come about before the year 2000. -- Lowell Ponte "The Cooling", 1976

The funny part is that it’s supposed to be 60 here in SE Iowa tommorow, and the forecast for the next couple of weeks looks pretty well average to above in terms of temps and little to no snow.

No doubt the warmer temps and no snow will be global warming too, just like cold and snow was global warming just a week ago. It’s funny though that every time we have a big push to explain the current weather as a result of AGW, the weather goes in the opposite direction, making them look like fools.

I’ve been following those “long-lead forecasts” from NOAA/CPC for years now. At 3-6 months out, they are roughly as accurate as a magic eight ball.

Here’s my 100% accurate prediction:

It’s going to get colder, or warmer, or stay the same.

Now where can I get a pile of money for being right?

Who knows whether we are headed toward warming or cooling. Its very hard to predict. One thing is for certain. If we do head into another “Little Ice Age” people are going to realize how incrediby stupid they were for being alarmed by global warming. Warm temperatures result in economic productivity and bursts of progress for human civilization. Global cooling generally results in economic depression on a world-wide scale and returns many people to subsistence life. The end result is famine, war and death.

Well, here in N Idaho, we’ve just had 1 - 3 feet of snow (depending on location) - mountains have had up to 6 feet. Today’s high is 21, tonight’s low -2. Will stay this way for the next week with day times highs lowering to mid teens. Lots of global warming here!

Actually, your line of thinking needs more government funded research. You should apply - you’ll probably get it.

Well, the solar max is going to occur in 2012-2014 and go for another decade or so. There goes the ice age.

What we’re experiencing now is from the lull in solar activity the past 11+ years.

Here in the midwest, it's 65 degrees OUTSIDE.

Surely that is Proof of Global Warming!

“Well, the solar max is going to occur in 2012-2014 and go for another decade or so.” How do you know? What if it is AWOL? I saw an article on this (we are all dooned in 2011)posted on Drudge and I think this is being touted to draw away from some of the good questions people are starting to ask the GW crowd. Solar predictions said we wouldn’t have the lull we did for as long as we have so I’m sticking with observations not projections. Another thing to remeber in this is what we count for sunspots kills any historical comparison. Specs visible to a telescope wouldn’t have been counted for most (almost all)of the historical record.

With sub zero temps and mucho snow, here in MOntana it is hard to believe that it is 65 degrees anywhere. :-)

Maybe, but he’ll have to get over that “being right” thing to qualify for government money.

Right now, it is in the 60s outside. I'll save a lot on my electric bill this month.

However, we cannot afford unusually warm summers - it already hits 100 for 2-3 months of the year.

Here is an interesting link showing how the current sun cycle lines up with the 1816 year without summer:
