Earthquake in Indiana?

Posted on 12/30/2010 5:27:42 AM PST by ducttape45

Here in Indiana, near Grissom ARB, we just felt what we think was an earthquake. Can anyone confirm?

Heard the boom and felt it in Noblesville.

I’m from SoCal originally so I guessed 4.0. The quakes out here definitely feel different than California quakes.

Not under a table - in the space between a sturdy coffee table and a couch would be good. If the roof comes down, that’s likely to be a spot that will leave a void for you.

“Godzilla” by Blue Oyster Cult
With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound
He pulls the spitting high tension wires down

Helpless people on a subway train
Scream bug-eyed as he looks in on them

He picks up a bus and he throws it back down
As he wades through the buildings toward the center of town

Oh no, they say hes got to go
Go go Godzilla, yeah
Oh no, there goes Kokomo
Go go Godzilla, yeah

Aren’t most wood frame homes quite robust in earthquakes due to the inherent flexibility of the material?

Did you feel it?

Report shaking and damage at your location. You can also view a map displaying accumulated data from your report and others.

Caliconstruction:

Cheap balloon framing, lots of braces. Sheathe in 5/8 scheissboard. Wrap in chickenwire, 2 layers, and gun-stucco. (Dammit José, get the cement on the frickin' house, willya?)
Should handle anything up to Richter 15. Screw everything down inside. Ride it out. It's like being in an anchored boat! LA Dude. Bad is Good! Unless you have a ground slide underneath. Then, call insurance and make a trip to the house junkyard.

Yes! In LA they have house junkyards, where you can by a slightly used complete house, even a 10 unit small apartment building, tow it to your lot, and be ready to go in a week! That's how strong this really crappy construction is!

When I was on Guam we would regularly have earthquakes. Being on an island that is actually on top of an extinct volcano (or so they say) might have **something** to do with that.

Anyway, I was sitting at my desk on day and we got a small quake. The keyboard of my computer started dancing across the desk. Another time I was in bed, a water bed, and it started a wave, almost threw me out of bed. Pretty freaky.

Yea your right. I just couldn’t remember. As far as I know we now live in a place that wouldn’t get earthquakes big enough to cause that kind of damage, but, who knows. In this life nothing is certain.

I’m in Angola...far northeast Indiana...and felt it while lying in bed. Only lasted 5-10 seconds, mostly a rattling. I then googled Indiana earthquakes and sure enough thats what I felt.
Similar thing several years ago but shorter.

I’m guessing this is the Fortville. But that’s just a guess...I haven’t even looked at the details at all.

Mt. Carmel fault? Carmel fault is in Israel.

This was norh of Indianapolis, so I’m thinking it’s the Fortville. But I’m not a seismologist, nor am I a licensed Professional Geologist in Indiana, so this isn’t any professional opinion. :-)

Indiana University geologist Michael Hamburger told Indianapolis television station WTHR that the temblor occurred in an area “that’s seismically very quiet.”

Rusty Baldwin of USGS agreed that it was unusual. He said there are no known fault lines in the area where the quake was centered.

Baldwin said two quakes had been reported within 60 miles of the epicenter in years past, including a 3.8 quake in 2004 and a 3.0 quake in 1990.

“They can happen pretty much anywhere” where stresses build up in the earth’s crust, he said.

There's an entire mountain range still intact buried under the limestone!

It's got everything any mountain range has including continental type fracturing all the way to the upper mantle.

The faults are interconnected, but last time I looked they are NOT connected to the main Mississipi Fault or the cluster around New Madrid.

Not really ~ they mostly fall down, or over, as they bounce along the ground.

Sorry...I thought the Fortville was up in that area. I’ll shut up now. :-)
