If you ever read MALEVIL ( about living post nuke war ) they used a compost pile to heat their water . I am amazed how hot a pile of grass clippings can be when it is below freezing outside.You actually can burn your hand .Then there is spontaneous combustion( really hot ) from rags and paint thinner .

I never thought of that, but now that you mention it, it makes sense.
Here in the northwest there are outfits that take branches, etc., etc. and run it through the chippers to turn it in to mulch/garden stuff.
And if you drive by one of these piles in the winter, you can see the steam just billows out of them. I have no idea how hot it can get inside, but yeah, spontaneous combustion is a possibility!
Should be more than enough to heat a tank of water!
