"Any top ten list is bound to be subjective, but this one has criteria: to make this list, a show must have longevity (Sports Night was great, but didnt last), staying power (Threes Company was funny, but hopelessly dated), strong writing (hopefully self-explanatory) and memorable moments (theres a good reason that the final episode of M.A.S.H. was until very recently the most watched show in television history). Here are my choices, and let the debate begin."
DITTOS!
Rubicon RAWKS!
And man oh man did it ever get intense in these last few EPs!
Hill Street Blues,
Gilligan’s Island,
Adam-12,
McHales Navy,
Star Trek,
Dragnet,
Bewitched,
The Brady Bunch,
I'll never forget that EP.
My family almost always gathered to watch Carol and we were all fans of the movie Gone with the Wind. When she came downs those steps and uttered that now famous line we all lost it. My Dad litaerally laughed hard enough to almost faint. (He got dizzy and couldn't stand for several minutes.)
The only time we laughed harder was the "Turkey Episode" on WKRP in Cincinnati. For years afterward when one of us would do something dumb that was funny some one would say: "As God is my witness I thought turkeys could fly..." and we all would laugh just as hard again!
I agree on Carol Burnett. Unlike SNL, it never sucked for years at a time.
Frasier and Seinfeld belong on the list.
MTM for sure.
24 is a winner in my book.
Firefly was outstanding.
Star Trek was one of the greats.
Almost anything on HBO beats half of that list.
One of my favorites was The Flip Wilson Show.
It seemed like every major celebrity at the time appeared on it and had a great time interacting with Flip and some of his outrageous characters such as Geraldine Jones and Reverend Leroy from The Church of What’s Happening Now.
You’ve never heard of the character Archie Bunker?
Hardly forgotten issues. Hmmm, let's see. They argued about:
Abortion
Gun control
Gay rights
Religion
Islam (yes, in one episode.)
Israeli-Arab relations
Racism
Reverse discrimination
Party politics
Communism
Socialism
All long forgotten, right?
I love Seinfeld and I agree with you. Knowing NYC well adds to the enjoyment of the show, from the locations to the characters.
Every episode was a war movie shot in six days. Some were poorly written but out of the 152 episodes there are at least twenty that are spectacular examples of run and gun film-making with solid stories, realistic dialogue, great acting, terrific action sequences and directing that puts most of today's golden boys to shame.
If I taught film COMBAT! would be a key part of the syllabus.
You must be counting animated shows like The Simpsons. Ozzie and Harriet is still the longest running live action sitcom.
Inspector Morse.
The late Nancy Culp, who was indeed a lesbian and hard core lefty.
After the run of the show was over, Nancy returned to her hometown in Pennsylvania in the late '70s. In 1980 she was the Democrat nominee for the US House seat in her district. Buddy Ebson (Uncle Jed) actually cut local TV spots endorsing her Republican opponent. He said he liked her personally, but she was a hard core liberal.
She went down in flames that November.
