What's the worst "Party Food" you ever encountered?

With the holiday entertainment season upon us, it's time to compare notes about what the worst Party fare anyone has ever encountered. There are innumerable Culinary Disasters to relate out there, so why not start early and avoid an Entertainment Faux Pas of your own?

My wife and I worked for a title insurance company in Portland, Oregon for a while back around the turn of the Century, and we had numerous opportunities to experience some of the most goat-gagging recipes that people came up with for office pot-lucks and various event parties.

Some remain legendary, and my wife and I were dredging up a few of them tonight, hence this post.

Our joint vote goes to our Dearly departed former co-worker Rose, who presented the Staff with her personal offering of a very creative Jello mold; the recipe follows....

1 Package Lime Jello
1 Can Tuna Fish in Oil (it's important...)
Frozen Green Peas

Prepare the Jello per the box. To help cool it, add the frozen peas to the hot/warm jello (but make sure it is not hot enough to cook the peas...). As the Jello starts to set, add the partially drained Tuna, pour into the mold of your choice, and refrigerate until set.

To serve, turn the mold out onto a dinner plate, and the residual tuna smell will draw plenty of flies to garnish with...

The Tuna in Oil is important because when served, and as the mold warms to room temperature, the residual oil in the tuna adds a marvelous rainbow sheen (that contrast nicely with the fly wings) to the melting jello and the mostly raw peas....this recipe is obviously about the texture but don't discount the aroma...

OK, I was judging a Chili cook-off. One of the recipes included 'way too much cumin, and peanut butter!

It smelled fecal ... I have no idea what it tasted like. I couldn't get it past my nose. I just gave it a rating of zero and moved on.

Impoverished, even.

Like some other foods [most notably, coconut] it’s as if you can never actually finish chewing them.

I once knew a vegan who kept posting his “Lima Bean Loaf” recipe on holidays.

One of the ingredients was ketchup.

*gag*

Never had durian.

I would use that dried cuttlefish and those dry salted plums to keep me awake when I was on 16 hour watches on the submarine.

That’s why the Good Lord made FedEx and dry ice....:)

[you could just throw it together yourself and omit the offensive limas..that’s the actual recipe and the “proper amounts” are pretty lenient...when it looks like hog slop, you’ve got the proportions right...then, you simply bake it]

I can guess how that kept you awake: the cuttlefish smell would make you puke and the plums would give you diarrhea?

However, having to go to the toilet every 30 seconds probably would not satisfy most people's definition of "being on watch" unless being on watch included your entire GI tract from the mouth to anus staging the French Revolution in your gut!

I cook it for my dogs all the time and the first one, I’d simmered gently for hours.

I went out to skin and debone it and half of it was gone.

Hubby [once again] mistook the dogs’ dinner for his own.

He loved it.

It’s hard to make a proper Hillbilly out of a Federal Hill, RI boy but by golly, I’ve done it....:))

That’s a triumvirate of evil: cuttlefish, dried asian plums and jalapenos.

Join the club.

At Thanksgiving, we got the ubiquitous “Tofukey” turkey analogue recipe.

He was a weird, kinda loony liberal guy which reinforced my belief that a B12 deficiency can make you crazy...:)

We used to eat it raw when we were kids, too!
I used to stick the rhubarb in the sugar bowl to sweeten it abit, made my Mom real mad!
LOL
