Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed part a 3,400-year-old statue of the pharaoh Amenhotep III, believed to be the grandfather of the young King Tutankhamun, antiquities chief Zahi Hawass said on Saturday. 'The statue was found near the northern entrance of Amenhotep III's temple and depicts the king sitting down on a throne with Amun,' the chief deity, Hawass said. The 4ft by 3ft statue of Amenhotep III in Kom el-Hittan was discovered at the site of the pharaoh's mortuary temple in the southern city of Luxor, Egypt's Ministry of Culture said. The temple is one of the largest on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor.

Amenhotep III - Nebmaatre - (1382 - 1344 BC)

Amenhotep (or heqawaset) was this kings birth name, meaning " Amun is Pleased, Ruler of Thebes." His throne name was Nub-maat-re, which means "Lord of Truth is Re."

It is believed that Amenhotep III ruled for almost 40 years during the 18th Dynasty of Egypt's history that represented one of its most prosperous and stable periods.

It was Amenhotep III's grandfather, Tuthmosis III, who is sometimes referred to as the Napoleon of ancient Egypt, who built the foundation of this success by dominating through military action Egypt's Syrian, Nubian and Libyan neighbors.

Because of that, little or no military actions were called for during his grandson's reign. The small police actions in Nubia that did take place were directed by his son and viceroy of Kush, Merymose (or perhaps an earlier viceroy).

Amenhotep III's birth is splendidly depicted in a series of reliefs inside a room on the east side of the temple of Luxor. Built by Amenhotep III, the room was dedicated to Amun. However, it portrays the creator god, Khnum of Elephantine at modern Aswan with his ram head, fashioning the child and his ka on a potter's wheel under the supervision of the goddess Isis.

Probably the end results were to make the Pharaoh look commanding. Sculptors were at liberty to make it happen.

In an article in the last National Geographic, they said that King Tut's grandmother has red hair.

And....there's something else:

The Egyptians have tested autosomal and Y-DNA markers of three Pharaohs of the 18th dynasty : Amenhotep III, his son Akhenaten and grandson Tutankhamun. The aim was to determine the cause of death of Tutankhamun, who died at age 19. It appears to have been malaria.

Although not yet published officially, the Y-DNA results were said to confirm the paternity between the Pharaohs. The video from Discovery Channel shows the Y-STR results*, which appear to be R1b and indeed the European R1b1b2 rather than the Levantine/Egyptian R1b1a. R1b1b2 is quite rare in modern Egypt (2% of the population) and was assumed to have come mostly through the Greek and Roman occupation. R1b1a makes up 4% of the Egyptian male lineages and dates from the Paleolithic.

The 18th dynasty (starting in 1570 BCE) follows the period of Indo-European expansion to Europe (4300-2000 BCE), India, Persia and the Middle-East (1700-1500 BCE). The Hittites took over central Anatolia from 1750 BCE, and the Mitanni (of Indo-Iranian origin) ruled Syria from circa 1500 BCE.

*Only three STR results have been officially published : DYS393=13, DYS458=16, GATA-H4=10

N.B. : There is always the possibility that the video did not show the actual results of the Pharaohs, but those of someone of Western European descent from the US, thinking that nobody would look carefully. This would seriously damage the credibility of Discovery Channel though. I would be that they completed made up the video and the images bear no relation to the narrative.

They tested Akhenaten’s DNA? I wasn’t aware they had a piece of him lying around.
