With all candor, and without a rascist bone in my body; since Obama is from Kenya, the only Revolution to which he could even remotely be connected, through his late father, would have to be the Mau-Mau anti-colonialist revolution which took place OVER THERE.

My great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather Franz Sigrist, later “Englishized” to Francis Sechrist, volunteered and served in the Revolutionary Army, according to Prowell’s two volume History of York County, PA.

I don't think I had heard about Prof. Gates being a member. It's great if descendants of black patriots of the Revolution, or black descendants of white patriots, can prove their descent and want to become members, as long as they support the goals of the organization (which are not partisan). The same goes for men of other ethnic or racial backgrounds who are eligible to join.

3 of my 4 grandparents had no ancestors in America at the time of the Revolution, but I was able to prove my eligibility based on an ancestor of the 4th grandparent and joined more than 12 years ago.

It’s not required to prove your eligibility based on the male line of ancestry—descent on the maternal side is perfectly acceptable to join the SAR or DAR.
