Professor booted from Starbucks

NEW YORK, - A New York English professor said she was kicked out of a Starbucks by three police officers because she refused to follow the cafe's ordering rules.

Lynne Rosenthal, who gave her age as early 60s, said she got into an argument with a barista Sunday morning because she refused to specify whether she wanted butter or cheese on her multigrain bagel, the New York Post reported Monday.

"I just wanted a multigrain bagel," Rosenthal said. "I refused to say 'without butter or cheese.' When you go to Burger King, you don't have to list the six things you don't want."

"Linguistically, it's stupid, and I'm a stickler for correct English," she said.

Rosenthal said a manager called police during the incident and three officers who responded to the scene ordered her to leave the store.

"It was very humiliating to be thrown out, and all I did was ask for a bagel," Rosenthal said. "If you don't use their language, they refuse to serve you. They don't understand what a plain multigrain bagel is."

A Starbucks employee at the store during the incident said Rosenthal was being unreasonable.

I can’t even imagine the horror of dating someone like that!

Well, unless you have an Oedipus complex I can't imagine you would want to date someone who is in her sixties!  Besides, she probably wouldn't understand what you mean, and interpret your invitation as an offer to marry her or somethin' LOL.

I went back and reread the article and I see you are right—it didn’t say she ordered a plain bagel.

I don’t know that she acted immaturely. More likely, she couldn’t handle the pressure and cracked up. Happens to a lot of us old folks. Usually people don’t call the police, they just remember some crazy aunt they have in the family and move on.

Which is why the “like that” is so important. LOL. I’ve about given up hope on marriage, anyway - 60 year old divas certainly don’t interest me. ;)

I don't use the special language either at the Starbucks, especially the pretentious words they use to describe the cup sizes. I basically order a large regular just like I was at the Dunkin Donuts and never get any grief. I'm thinking there's more to this story as well, like maybe this woman was just being a general pain in the neck.

Speaking of Starbucks, their coffee prices aren't as high as they used to be. I'm thinking that McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts must be eating into their coffee market share.

Charbucks is a snooty fad business. I’ll never go there a second time.

Why the hell would you waste your time standing in line and then pay three or four times for a cup of burnt coffee?

You could get a truly large and better grade of coffee at McDonalds for a buck.

Lol.

My son and I just returned home after a road trip. We stopped at McDonald's and got coffee one morning, and he complained how awful it was. When we found a Starbuck's a few miles down the road, he dropped his almost-full cup of McD's coffee in the trash on the way into the Starbuck's.

I'm not a big fan of underroasted American coffee. I prefer the European style of dark roast, strong coffee. My son was raised on coffee the way I make it.

I’m not a McDonalds fan either, but at least in Maine, they upgraded their coffee to a pretty good blend.

I like strong coffee too, but if I wanted Espresso, I’d order it.

By the way, how do you and your son drink your coffee?

He'll either drink it black, or loaded up with sweet syrups. I like latte.

Thank you, thank you. If I were to travel to New York State, I’d much prefer it to be for someone like you than a diva. ;)

Thanks Scott, but between you and me, I’m not in NY anymore. But hey, we can still go out if you care to visit me.  I will email you the info, hehehe.

Do you always list the ingredients you do not desire with every order you place at a restaurant? My bet is you specify those ingredients that are included in the order unless you ask for them to be omitted. Starbucks bagels do not automatically come with butter or cheese. Perhaps it is more a point of logic than a point of English.

Why do you assume she raised her voice?

I assumed she raised her voice because the police were called, and this was later verified by her own testimony.

Perhaps it is more a point of logic than a point of English.

This is nothing more than a lady on a high horse. I don't see why you feel the need to defend her, really. I don't think I'm being illogical pointing out her boorish, elitist behavior.

Actually, speaking of elitists, look at the way these down-to-earthers can’t STAND that someone might enjoy Starbucks coffee or pastries once in a while.

I assume you speak Starbuckese very well, which is your right. I believe extremism in the defense of the English language or logic is no vice, which is my right.

Absolutely not - I can’t stand Starbucks. The two times I’ve been there, if that, I’ve never had an issue with them understanding my language. I don’t live in a fantasy world - small, medium or large is all that I’ll say. Everything else is faux intellectualism.

However, if I order a multigrain bagel and they ask me if I want butter or cheese with it, I’m not going to flip out. That’s my right. :)

Have a good night!

Starbucks is one of those leftist companies...

...Starbucks does respect/allow Concealed Carry.

I don't know how "leftist" Starbucks is. Certainly they cater to that crowd and if you go in to one of their joints the place is crawling with them - low wage help and big spending customers. Starbucks, the enterprise, is making bank off that combination, turning cheap commodities into big money.
