These carbines look very intimidating, are easy to shoot, and are quite reliable. I have one in 9mm, and the GF likes it. I'd prefer an AR-15 or mini-14 with frangible bullets, but they are quite a bit more expensive and louder.

Interesting thread. We have been trying to decide on a home defense weapon, and were told by LEO that a shotgun is best. Then someone said that a shotgun is not good because of what one poster said- barrel could be grabbed, makes a mess in your house with the spray, the noise it makes as you chamber the shell alerts the BG (for the good or bad!).

So confusing.

I had a bear try to break in one night. I think a 45 will only make a bear intruder mad. I am waiting on a 870 riot gun with a short barrel. I have a 45 Colt for two leg intruders.

I leave my first line of home defense to the professionals...

Anyone makes it past him, gets a .45 lead sandwich door prize dispensed from a m1911.

If people are worried about recoil—as the article suggests—then that probably means they aren’t that handy or rookies with firearms anyway. With an intruder, they’re gonna be to nervous to “take a bead on someone” with a smoke stick shooting a .45ACP. They probably won’t have much target discipline—which is why a shotgun is the original point and click—just point it in the general direction and you’re bound to hit.

You just can't beat a short-barreled 12-gauge pump loaded with 3-inch magnums with 1-7/8th ounces of #4 lead shot at close range.

And you don't have to worry about collateral damage on the other side of your sheet rock.

One thing that needs to be remembered is that a shotgun with a pistol grip and a short barrel is AKA a “wrist breaker.”

Years ago, my dad really wanted one, so I bought him a Mossberg 500 for Christmas. After a few rounds of buckshot through it, he traded it off for something else. (^;

My Ruger PC-9 (9mm) holds a 30 round magazine (uses the same mags as the P89) and can get rid of those rounds as fast a one can pull the trigger. Would rather have had the .40 cal, but really only ended up with this in a swap and turned out I like it. Mrs. BCC can drill targets with it.

Marlin made a .45 Auto carbine for awhile back I think in the late 80s or early 90s, about the same time Ruger was making these PCs.

The old Marlin Camp .45 (which I really wish I’d bought) used standard Colt mags. Does this do you know? If it does I may just have to pick one up.

I love my 45 ACP colt, loaded with Black Talon hollow points. (AKA, “Garbage Cans”) Guaranteed to stay in the room and tear their target a new body cavity.

My SUB 2K cost me $219 three years back so deals can be found. Original owner ran 1 box of 50 rds and traded it back for something else. It compliments my G17 nicely.

Bought a NEF Handi-Rifle in S&W 500 Magnum when they first came out. Single shot but it's a hoot to shoot!

The state prohibitions against silencers really piss me off. (Somebody was watching way too many spy movies.

The prohibitions are federal as well. It was gangster movies, Alphonse Capone type gangsters plus Bonnie and Clyde type freelancers, that got the federal laws tightly controlling silencers, machine guns, and short barreled shotguns. The real gangsters were using such weapons, but they of course ignored the new laws anyway.

"To my way of thinking, a semi-automatic weapon is the best home defense shotgun. A good one costs the thick end of a grand. This Hi-Point .45 ACP Carbine costs $330. The SUB-2000 goes for $409."

Plenty of good riot guns, semi and pump, can be found for less than the $330 you propose spending on that Hi-Point junk. Just take a trip to Cabela's and browse their consignment rack. If there's not a Cabela's within easy driving distance to your home, move.

Shotguns can be loaded with ammo that WON’T go through several walls and you don’t have to be a crack shot.

I used to have a sub-2000 in 9mm. It was fun, very 007 in portability, but has anybody ever heard the old saying: The purpose of a handgun is to give you time to fight your way to a rifle or shotgun? That's the idea. A 9mm carbine is not any more of a "fight stopper" than is a 9mm handgun. For that matter the same can be said of the 45acp. A 12 ga is a decisive fight stopper.
