I just watched "Jaws" for the first time

I know. Big Deal. Who cares? Why post a vanity about it? I don't know.

Jaws came out when I was five years old. I just watched it for the first time. I had heard that the special effects weren't that great. So I never bothered watching it. It was actually pretty decent.

I don't know about Jaws 2 - 4. Should I bother?

Did you know that Spielberg was worried Jaws would be a big failure?

“I saw it when it first came out...it was the ONLY movie where I didn’t eat the food I bought at the concession”

I didn’t eat my food, either, but not because I was engrossed in the movie. I jumped so high that the popcorn in the box in my hand flew into the lap of the guy sitting behind me. All of it.

“Star Wars should be seen in the original,”

I saw the original when it came out, and loved it. I saw it again and asked myself, “What was I thinking? This is horrible!” Then I remembered that the first time I was in Alaska, and our group had stuffed our parka pockets full of mini bottles of vodka, etc., and then it made sense.

Any other 30 year old movies you haven’t seen?

There is a Clint Eastwood movie that most folks haven't seen that I think is really good. It's called "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot". Truly a terrific movie, if you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.

I was holding a big bag of popcorn and when the shark comes up near his hand, I slap my hands together in fright and the popcorn flew in the air and for rows...

That wasn't you that ran screaming out of the theater during that scene, the first time I watched it, was it? ;-)

Do you make them watch Psycho before staying in a Motel too? lol ........... I might start that tradition after I see the movie. I do break out "National Lampoon's Vacation" before every road trip.

Here's one to consider showing them before taking them to the circus..... ;-)

"Suddenly she is yanked under the dark water and is released. She has a look of shock and wonderment on her face."

Interesting bit of movie trivia about that scene. The Mechanical Shark was supposed to be used in it. It was supposed to shoot up out of the water with Chrissy in its mouth and have parts of her body fall out before it went back under. However, the shark would not work properly and so they had to improvise.

They did so by putting a harness around Chrissy's waste and attaching long ropes on either side. Then several men were on the other ends of each rope and pulled her violently back and forth.

And in doing such they made one of the scariest opening scenes of any movie ever made. AND, if they had used the mechanical shark it wouldn't have been nearly as scary because of the fact that with using the rope trick "you can't see what is going on beneath the surface" which is inherently scary to us land-loving humans!

Further the movie established a mostly unbreakable rule for good monster/horror flick production that is still used by good film makers to this day.

Never reveal the creature/antagonist in the first part of the movie! Keep 'em guessing!

I liked Return of the Jedi up until the first appearance of the ewok. The final clash of Luke and Vader I liked as well. Episode 1 was the nadir. 2 and 3 were marginally better which is damning with faint praise.

"Same director did Boogie Nights and Magnolia. "

Oh, I did not know that. I had never heard of the guy before, so I assumed it was his first picture.

I saw this with my best friend in the theater when it came out. We waited in the longest line I have ever seen.

When the face came through the boat, my friend screamed like a little girl.

We still joke about it.

One of my favorites. I recently bought it on BluRay.

Lucky you! (It isn’t yet released on blu-ray).

I think it’s a great movie that stands the test of time. It is basically a good story told masterfully.

The movie isn’t about a shark, but rather, three men on a boat.

I agree. One of the best parts is them just sitting in the cabin, when Quint's talking about the Indianapolis.
