Grand Old Partisan salutes John Bingham, principal author of the 14th Amendment and a great REPUBLICAN.
Writing yesterday in The Washington Monthly, Steve Benen accused the GOP of going "From the Party of Bush to the Party of Jefferson Davis." His point, it seems, is that questioning whether the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to children born in the USA of people here illegally is akin to advocating slavery. Such absurdity is not worth refuting. I will, however, point out a fact that Benen overlooks -- the Party of Jefferson Davis is the DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
Indeed, the Democratic Party was the Party of Slavery, and Democrats were known as "Slave-ocrats" by the GOP. Yes, Jefferson Davis was a Democrat, as were all the Confederates. Not one Republican fought against the Union during the Civil War.
In yesterday's Washington Post, E.J. Dionne accused the GOP of shedding a birthright. Like Benen, he argued that the framers of the 14th Amendment -- all Republicans, by the way -- had in mind what Dionne and Benen and so many other Democrats say they intended back in the 1860s.
The Democrats opposed the 14th Amendment yet now assert that they know best what Rep. John Bingham (R-OH) meant when he wrote it.
By ignoring the heritage of our Grand Old Party, Republicans place themselves on the defensive and make themselves vulnerable to Democrat demagoguery, such as the latest from Benen and Dionne.

Be sure to also point out that it was ideologically the progressive movement that made its start as an extreme racist movement. Abortion sprung from eugenics and its ideology of social engineering the people, separation of church and state as a bigoted doctrine to keep religion out of the public square was started because republicans invited blacks into Congress during religious ceremonies by KKK lawyer, progressive and Supreme Court justice Hugo Black. Of course also progressive icons were always associated with the KKK and with racist policies.
Oh no! Run around in circles but make sure you get approval from your masters first. So while you good little conservatives are crapping all over yourselves about slavery make sure you also malign and denigrate Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, James Madison et al? How pathetic can you get? The Marxist don't need to do anything else to help in the destruction of our once great nation.
Down the memory hole bookmark.
And let's not forget that evil Republican George Wallace and all those other southern governors trying to block school integration by standing in schoolhouse doors.
Sorry but you are just showing your idiocy. It was Britain that brought slavery to this land and not the Founders. Jefferson in the first draft of the Declaration condemned King George for it and later as President passed the Abolition of Slavery act and it was the vision of the Founders that ended slavery as well.
It was though the democrat party and the progressive movement that clung to slavery, denounced the Founders and continually still to this day fight to deny equal representation for all.
Now wasn't he the guy that raped his own slaves and is now the mascot for the RAT party?
So was George Wallace, former governor of Ala and segregationist. So was Governor Lester Maddux of Georgia who denied Sherrod her farm loan that started the lawsuit.
Believe it or not, this statement is accurate!
Democrats of that period were the conservatives, fighting for states rights and against an all powerful, centralized, federal government. They were against federal funding for infrastructure, etc.
The Republicans of that period were fighting for an all powerful, centralized, federal government and against states rights. They were for federal funding of all infrastructure, etc.
To counter that very notion is the purpose of my book and blog.
The only state’s right the Confederate/Democrats cared about was slavery. They even opposed a state’s right NOT to allow slavery.
Who cares what George Mason wrote? It was more than 150 years ago!

No that statement is not true. Democrats were not conservatives they were progressives and as all progressives do they use the Constitution when it suits them and twist it to their political will. The when it suits them they also denounce it as well.
If you think that it is then explain how it is that it was the progressive movement that revitalized the KKK. All of the icons of the progressive movement were racist and associated with the KKK and the democrats today still follow these KKK progressive policies from abortion with originated with the eugenics movement and was all about social engineering race and society, the democrats and progressives still follow along these lines today. Even the progressive movements cherished separation of church and state started with the democrats of old boycotting religious services at the Capitol because republicans were inviting blacks, it then continued and when progressive icon and democrat FDR appointed KKK lawyer and progressive Hugo Black to the bench they got to finally continue their bigotry against Catholics and Republicans with his famous doctrine.
Progressive president Woodrow Wilson used to show KKK films at the White House, he also locked up thousands for dissenting against his policies and of course FDR even went as far as locking up a whole race. Even today the most celebrated member of the democrat party is KKK Byrd. He has is called the conscience of the Senate by his fellow democrats and has been given more internal party promotions than any other democrat in history.
Trying to claim that both parties switched all of their constituents or members is pure left-wing propaganda.
Now that’s a dumb retort and a complete non-sequitor to my comment.
This is an incorrect statement. Slavery was not the only state's rights the Confederates supported. I don't have time right now, but will get back to you on this one. Please consider nullification in the meantime.
The statement is indeed true. The original post by too much time referenced the republican party of Lincoln. The democrats at the time of Lincoln were indeed the conservatives. The democrats of Lincoln's time were against a centralized federal government and the reverse was true with the republicans.
As for the rest of your post referencing the democrat party (which is POST Lincoln), the KKK, FDR, etc., you are correct.
I'll post more on the democrat party at the time of Lincoln, but don't have time right this minute.
You’re right. The Confederate/Democrats also supported the right to whip black people.
The Democratic Party Platform of 1856 includes, but is not limited to the following:
1. That the Federal Government is one of limited power, derived solely from the Constitution; and the grants of power made therein ought to be strictly construed by all the departments and agents of the government; and that it is inexpedient and dangerous to exercise doubtful constitutional powers.
2. That the Constitution does not confer upon the General Government the power to commence and carry on a general system of internal improvements.
3. That the Constitution does not confer authority upon the Federal Government, directly or indirectly, to assume the debts of the several States, contracted for local and internal improvements, or other State purposes; nor would such assumption be just or expedient.
4. That justice and sound policy forbid the Federal Government to foster one branch of industry to the detriment of any other, or to cherish the interests of one portion to the injury of another portion of our common country; that every citizen and every section of the country has a right to demand and insist upon an equality of rights and privileges, and to complete and ample protection of persons and property from domestic violence or foreign aggression.
5. That it is the duty of every branch of the Government to enforce and practice the most rigid economy in conducting our public affairs, and that no more revenue ought to be raised than is required to defray the necessary expenses of the Government, and for the gradual but certain extinction of the public debt.
6. That the proceeds of the public lands ought to be sacredly applied to the national objects specified in the Constitution; and that we are opposed to any law for the distribution of such proceeds among the States, as alike inexpedient in policy and repugnant to the Constitution.
7. That Congress has no power to charter a national bank; that we believe such an institution one of deadly hostility to the best interests of the country, dangerous to our republican institutions and the liberties of the people, and calculated to place the business of the country within the control of a concentrated money power, and above the laws and the will of the people; and that the results of Democratic legislation in this and all other financial measures upon which issues have been made between the two political parties of the country, have demonstrated to candid and practical men of all parties, their soundness, safety, and utility, in all business pursuits.
8. That the separation of the moneys of the Government from banking institutions is indispensable for the safety of the funds of the Government and the rights of the people.
As you can see, a conservative platform which is against an all powerful, centralized government (MZ - this means supportive of states rights!)

The Democratic Party Platform for 1860, kept everthing from their 1856 platform and added only 7 resolutions to it, including:
2. Inasmuch as difference of opinion exists in the Democratic party as to the nature and extent of the powers of a Territorial Legislature, and as to the powers and duties of Congress, under the Constitution of the United States, over the institution of slavery within the Territories,
Resolved, That the Democratic party will abide by the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States upon these questions of Constitutional Law.
(MZ - I posted this one so you can note that the party resolved to abide by the USSC on these questions of Constitutional Law)
The link for the 7 additional resolutions of 1860 is below.

Contrast the above with this from the Republican Party Platform of 1856:
“Resolved: That, with our Republican fathers, we hold it to be a self-evident truth, that all men are endowed with the inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that the primary object and ulterior design of our Federal Government were to secure these rights to all persons under its exclusive jurisdiction; that, as our Republican fathers, when they had abolished Slavery in all our National Territory, ordained that no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law, it becomes our duty to maintain this provision of the Constitution against all attempts to violate it for the purpose of establishing Slavery in the Territories of the United States by positive legislation, prohibiting its existence or extension therein. That we deny the authority of Congress, of a Territorial Legislation, of any individual, or association of individuals, to give legal existence to Slavery in any Territory of the United States, while the present Constitution shall be maintained.”
Their republican fathers had not abolished Slavery in all National Territory. This passage also states they deny Congress rights which the Constitution actually grants it!

Now for a look at the Republican Party Platform of 1860 which includes this:
12. That, while providing revenue for the support of the General Government by duties upon imports, sound policy requires such an adjustment of these imposts as to encourage the development of the industrial interest of the whole country; and we commend that policy of national exchanges which secures to the working men liberal wages, to agriculture renumerative prices, to mechanics and manufactures an adequate reward for their skill, labor, and enterprise, and to the nation commercial prosperity and independence.

I believe it is obvious that The Democratic Platform was indeed the conservative one.
(MZ)Yes, the Platforms differ on the issue of slavery. That is not what my original statement was referencing. My post stated that the democrats were actually the conservatives.
To the issue of slavery; As I previously noted, The Democratic Platform resolved to abide by the USSC decisions in that realm and, basically, The Republican Party Platform does not.
This passage also states they deny Congress rights which the Constitution actually grants it!
This passage should read:
....they deny Congress, of a Territorial Legislation,.... That we deny the authority of Congress, of a Territorial Legislation, of any individual, or association of individuals, to give legal existence to Slavery in any Territory of the United States, while the present Constitution shall be maintained. Their republican fathers had not abolished Slavery in all National Territory. This passage also states they deny Congress rights which the Constitution actually grants it! Link for this one below.
