Believe it or not, this statement is accurate!
Democrats of that period were the conservatives, fighting for states rights and against an all powerful, centralized, federal government. They were against federal funding for infrastructure, etc.
The Republicans of that period were fighting for an all powerful, centralized, federal government and against states rights. They were for federal funding of all infrastructure, etc.
The only state’s right the Confederate/Democrats cared about was slavery. They even opposed a state’s right NOT to allow slavery.
No that statement is not true. Democrats were not conservatives they were progressives and as all progressives do they use the Constitution when it suits them and twist it to their political will. The when it suits them they also denounce it as well.
If you think that it is then explain how it is that it was the progressive movement that revitalized the KKK. All of the icons of the progressive movement were racist and associated with the KKK and the democrats today still follow these KKK progressive policies from abortion with originated with the eugenics movement and was all about social engineering race and society, the democrats and progressives still follow along these lines today. Even the progressive movement’s cherished separation of church and state started with the democrats of old boycotting religious services at the Capitol because republicans were inviting blacks, it then continued and when progressive icon and democrat FDR appointed KKK lawyer and progressive Hugo Black to the bench they got to finally continue their bigotry against Catholics and Republicans with his famous doctrine.
Progressive president Woodrow Wilson used to show KKK films at the White House, he also locked up thousands for dissenting against his policies and of course FDR even went as far as locking up a whole race. Even today the most celebrated member of the democrat party is KKK Byrd. He has is called the conscience of the Senate by his fellow democrats and has been given more internal party promotions than any other democrat in history.
Trying to claim that both parties switched all of their constituents or members is pure left-wing propaganda.
