Try to keep your lunch down, but my High School (conservative) daughter had a debate with her liberal friend - her liberal friend said that "actually, the parties have switched places- and the democrats of today would have been the party of Lincoln, back then." I know this girl's family well enough to know that she learned this from her very liberal parents.

"actually, the parties have switched places- and the democrats of today would have been the party of Lincoln, back then."

Believe it or not, this statement is accurate!

Democrats of that period were the conservatives, fighting for states rights and against an all powerful, centralized, federal government. They were against federal funding for infrastructure, etc.

The Republicans of that period were fighting for an all powerful, centralized, federal government and against states rights. They were for federal funding of all infrastructure, etc.
