What's nickname for Washington, D.C.?

WASHINGTON, - New York's the "Big Apple" but what's the nickname for Washington, D.C.?

That's the quandary some folks ponder, wondering why there's nothing better or cleverer than "the nation's capital" for their metropolitan center.

A new nickname for Washington could be "DMV," for District, Maryland, and Virginia, The Washington Post said Friday.

A Post column noted New York's moniker and mentioned Chicago as the "Windy City" but lamented the somewhat blase term "nation's capital."

DMV has turned up in some publications, has frequently been heard on local radio stations and perhaps is now gaining respectability with mainstream officialdom, the newspaper reported.

Not everyone is hip to the DMV autograph.

"I prefer 'the Washington Metropolitan Area, but I realize that doesn't quite ring well as a lyric, e-mail or text message," Sandy Bellamy, executive director of the Historical Society of Washington, told the Post.

Years ago, I saw some bumper stickers on cars praising Washington, DC, as “Chocolate City”. No way that could be the official nickname though.

Oooh, I LIKE that one!

(For those who don't get the reference, it's from Star Wars. Obi Wan Kenobi and Luke are standing on a overlook above the town and Kenobi says...

"Mos Eisley Spaceport...You never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious."

I think the city should be renamed. We dishonor our greatest citizen ever by attaching his name to that modern day Sodom. And I’m serious about that. Washington’s name should be removed post haste.

Don’t some news types call it “Foggy Bottom”?

Foggy Bottom is a particular area in DC, not the entire city. It's where the State Department and other offices are located, and so Foggy Bottom is shorthand for State.

I always thought it was “The Beltway”.

The Beltway is a term for I-495, the circular route around DC and its inner suburbs. It does not refer to DC as a city since it encloses a huge area far beyond the borders of Washington, but "inside the Beltway" refers to all the people, companies, and agencies that are part of the federal government and its mindset.
