Governors hamstrung by the sluggish economic rebound in their states and bound to balance their own budgets are pressing anew for Washington to step up with more help, some say even if it means adding to the nation's red ink.
Republicans and Democrats alike wrestled with how to capitalize on a fledgling rebound as they talked dollars and sense at their summer meeting just days into a new state budget year and as the economy shapes dozens of gubernatorial races across the country.
"All states still are facing tough fiscal situations even though I do believe we're in recovery," said West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, a Democrat who's taking over as chairman of the National Governors Association.
Added Gov. Jim Douglas, R-Vt., the outgoing chairman: "Governors have done what is necessary to get through this" _ repeatedly cutting budgets, restructuring government, laying off workers and draining rainy day funds.
But both men said states can't continue to climb out of the recession alone, and the NGA renewed its bipartisan appeal for Congress to pass stalled jobs legislation that includes billions of dollars in aid to states.

But Gov. Pat Quinn, D-Ill., said: "We need more help from Washington to protect against job cuts and health care cuts. If we don't do that, we're following Herbert Hoover economics."

States have to CUT SPENDING!
It’s really that simple.
Stop the ENTITLEMENTS and all the crazy SERVICES.
It’s time the “community” or ideally FAMILY took on thei rown responsibilities. Churches should also do more instead of just preaching it.
Time for the addicts to go cold turkey. NO MORE HEROIN.
Churches are getting less because people have less.
The GOVERNMENT shouldn’t be in the BUSINESS of “creating jobs”. It is the PRIVATE sector that needs to create the jobs. How much more RED INK are we supposed to incur? It will solve nothing and make our debt worse.
Amen to post 3! Well said.
Can someone more HTML-savvy kindly copy the headline, put strikethroughs across “Washington” and add the text, “taxpayers from other states”
Because Washington has nothing to give that it does not take from others, and if states are going broke because of their SOCIALISM, then they are asking the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT to steal money from fiscally responsible states to bail them out and to keep their paid-for voting base happily returning to the polls each election.
God does listen and works in ways we don't understand.
Not everything costs $$$$. Volunteering time and effort doesn't cost $$$. While time is worth money, the simple act of kindness is priceless.
The States should be cutting themselves off from Washington not asking for more money.
BOHICA my friend.
My small church gives more in time and money than the big churches. It costs a lot to run a mega church. My little country church out gives the big ones. That’s usually the way it is. The little churches know God, the big ones know how to get money. Rich churches give God lip service.
PA just gave Gov Rendell $300 million in “development” money to spread around on projects like the Murtha Center and the Specter Library. And then the Gov went to D.C. to beg for federal $. Ridiculous.
Say what?
I think this is a big fat lie.

I’m afraid you are right!
If the mega churches would cut back on their entertainment needs, they just might discover what your church has found. These mega churches often believe that $$$$$ is always the answer ... and solves the “problem”.
Those few are bleeding the rest of us to death.
That's a polite way of putting it.
It never stops, does it.
If it's not the federal government, it's the states looking out for their own bailouts for mismanagement and spending sprees.
How much do these Sanctuary Cities cost us? The states allow it, but who pays?
Unfortunately for that to make sense to them they’d have to know God. We pray for them. But we have now decided to disassociate from them. They seem inclined to let us go as we are a hick church of farmers. Only 80 members. But apparently we know something they don’t. Or someone. :-)
It strikes me that they know the money will come from their constituents but are to cowardly to raise the taxes. This way they can blame the Feds. When we’re broke, we cut our spending. When they are, they figure out another way to rob us.
