Always good to see the Dodgers lose. :-)
An interesting note on Babe Phelps. He had previously played for the Cubs, and he hit .367 for the Dodgers in 1936. That’s the highest BA for a catcher in the modern era.

Also, that Aqua-Velva ad is interesting. Only one out of seven men shaved every day in 1940? I suppose that’s probably right, since so many men worked in factories.
I’d guess it’s more like half nowadays. It has to be least one-third, wouldn’t you say?

Id guess its more like half nowadays. It has to be least one-third, wouldnt you say?I don't know. It seems like the favored look now days is not having shaved for a week. I guess that means on any day one out of seven men shave. I don't know how you are supposed to maintain that look every day though.
I am surprised by the Gilder ad. (BTW, why did you call it Aqua-Velva? Is it a prototype?) I just assumed everyone followed the advice of Groucho Marx, whose popular song has the refrain,
Shaving cream,
Be nice and clean.
Shave every day and
You'll always look keen.
Maybe the song wasn't written yet.
I don't want to be too self-promoting, but where else but at World War II +70 Years do you find this kind of discussion of vital historical detail? Text books? I don't think so.

My mistake. At the bottom of the ad, it suggests using Aqua-Velva after shaving. It could be that Glider was made by the same company, though.
And, thank you for posting these. I don’t get to read every one of them, but I really do like to look at them when I can. I love the details, as you point out. It’s a wonderful aspect of history to understand how people really lived.
