I don’t know about 13,000 feet of bedrock, but the subfloor geology is probably well know from all of the seismological sounding that found the oil in the first place. but even 13,000 feet of sand is sufficient. The water pressure at 5000’ is about 2500 psi and should provide a dampening effect on top of all that.

If we can get a nuke down the well then we can get cement down the well and theres no need for the nuke.

The nuke does not need to go down the hole, it can be beside the hole. When it goes off, it will - hopefully - seal it.

Like I said in a previous post, it is not a guaranteed fix, but if the only other option is to hopelessly watch all of the oil leak out over the next ten years, then it's worth a shot.

First of all, if you believe the Peak Oil myth and that ALL the oil can leak out of the Gulf, I can’t help you.

But given that, I will believe the experts at The Oil Drum site, who do this work every day, rather than a FReeper on Google. They say it will not work. In fact, there is a good chance that it will make cracks and matters worse.

Hope you don’t mind.

Nukes are not dangerous?

Dude, ten people in my famiy have cancer in a family with no cancer for generations. We all were growing up during the atmospheric testing back in the fifties. We all drank milk at a time when str 90 was circling the globe.

Come back and tell me that after your family has gone through this. I don’t know the mechanism but I know our gene pool was changed. I know this didn’t come out of the blue.

Yep create a Gulf full of nuclear radiation in place of the oil and possibly create multiple cracks in the sea bed. Chenobyl we don’t need in the Gulf.

“Put in an “executive order” that any oil recovered is the property of the skimmer and innovation takes over.”

The oil would be cleaned up in a MONTH if this were implemented. But NOOOOO. BP and/or our Fed govt are too greedy and stupid to do this.

You were downwind when atmospheric testing was being done with old-fashioned 1950's era nukes were being detonated. During the filming of the movie "The Conqueror" starring John Wayne, they used sand from the desert that was contaminated by these very old and dirty nukes:

41% of "The Conqureror's" crew later came down with cancer (including Wayne, who got it twice). The common factor? The movie was shot in Utah's Escalante Desert, where 11 atomic bombs had been tested, including two particularly dirty ones.

When I say nukes are not as dangerous as people say, I simply mean that we have been led to believe that a limited nuclear exchange between say, India and Pakistan would end the world as we know it. India and Pakistan have less nukes and less powerful nukes than those set off in the Nevada Desert.

Also notice, that some 5 million people live in Hiroshima and the surrounding prefecture after a particularly dirty bomb was set off there with the intent to kill people and break things. Levels of cancer and other disease are NOW no higher in Hiroshima and Nagasaki than in any other comparably sized metropolitan area.

I'm sorry about your family and their exposure to particularly dirty nuclear fallout - but I will stand by my statement that modern, clean nukes are not as terrifying as advertised. A single nuke set off deep undersea, nearly 50 miles off the coast, tuned to minimize radiation and maximize heat and blast represents a lesser danger to the gulf coast population than a 10-30 year gusher spewing oil, methane and a panoply of chemicals into the environment.

Isn’t he sexy with all that engineering info?

Engineers have always fascinated me, something about their fixing stuff and knowing math and being all cool.

I guess I grew up around too many english majors or something.

They are closing in on the original bore hole and with some luck they will be able to plug this thing from the bottom. Aug will be an interesting month of anticipation as they near the final depth with the relief well. From the BP press release of June 25.

....
Work on the first relief well, which started May 2, continues. The well reached a depth of 16,275 feet on June 23 before the drillstring was removed from the well to carry out the first ‘ranging’ run using wireline. During the ranging run, the MC252 well was successfully detected. Subsequent ranging runs will be needed to more precisely locate the well. Drilling and ranging operations will continue over the next few weeks towards the target intercept depth of approximately 18,000 feet, when ‘kill’ operations are expected to begin. The second relief well, which started May 16, is drilling ahead at a measured depth of 10,500 feet. Both wells are still estimated to take approximately three months to complete from commencement of drilling.

.....

Well see what is the ultimate solution is. So far I haven’t seen any mind numbing solutions being tried or proposed yet. All I see is a bunch of bureaucrats and naysayers sitting around doing next to nothing other than waiting for the relief wells to reach their target. What if they don’t work???

Perhaps you have overlooked this simple fact, but the genetic makeup of your family is changing constantly. It’s from marriage and procreation, not nuclear testing.

This is a remarkable genetic change with a number of cancers of different types, different genetic causation not explained by a change in one or two genes.

Perhaps our family is prone to genetic changes but I have seen a number of similar situations with a family clear of cancer for generations and suddenly the whole damn bunch gets it.

Whatever, I trust the oil drum people and they think nuking is not a good or workable idea.
