Whgen you poke a hole a mile into the center of the earth all bets are off......
As the old margarine add sez,”Its not nice to fool with mother nature”
Huh?? No I’m not a drilling expert. At the end of the day this is flow and pressure problem much like water or anything else fluid..........
When fish and other land and sea life,
By force will be put upon the beach by a strong wave,
Its form will appear strange, oily and horrible,
Coming by seawater very steadily it shall climb the walls as an enemy.

Actually, nuking might work.
Am I correct to assume, that you have about 5000 feet of water. Then about 13000 ft of bedrock before you hit the oil and gas?
A small nuke detonated half way down might just solidify the rock around the hole.
It could be a very small device, enough to produce the heat needed.
Oh one last comment... PHU*K the environmentalists....
You lost me at fuse
Watch the incredible SHRINKING oil slick:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/oil-spill-map.htm
It’s dissipating faster than it’s being created.
Now, why would Shell want to terrify people about domestic offshore oil production? Simple: They’re invested in Nigeria, Russia, the Middle East and Canadian oil sands. Not as much offshore America.

No. A nuke is detonated away from the well and the sea floor shifts to fill the hole.
The sea floor here is not the same as the Russian sea floor and the people at the “Oil Drum” site (the experts) say it won’t work. In fact, with the kind of sea floor we have, it would make matters worse.
Oh! THANK YOU!
>> Some geologic expert interviewed in a magazine article last week said that theres enough oil in this well for it to spew for 25 to 30 years. If so, God help us. <<
1. Not likely true. There’s about enough for another year, according to BP.
2. Too bad it isn’t true.
Oh for Heaven’s Sake.
What quatrain is that?
Because lots of people were writing poetry to fit after 9/11, all of it credited to Nostradamus and none of it true.
We’re all gonna die.
Nostradamus and MSNBC say so.
I’m not an engineer but I have been wondering why they could not use a plumbers plug for a temp stop until they drill new well vents. A long plug maybe 50 feet long made of flexible hard rubber about six inches in diameter. Shove it down the well pipe and expand the plug with air or a material that will withstand the pressure down there.
If we can get a nuke down the well then we can get cement down the well and theres no need for the nuke.
The first thing that needs to understood is the inability to get anything past the BOP, if you can get past the BOP you can plug with cement.
Nobody knows what it will really do, but if we are consigned to simply watching ALL of the oil leak out into the Gulf, nuking it does not seem to be such a longshot. If it doesn't work, the oil leaks out as it did before. If it works, it stops leaking.
The radiation of the nuke is not really an issue. American nuclear technology is very advanced, way back in 1954 we miniaturized a nuke to be the size of a football and the detonation method simply changes the shape of the sub-critical mass from football shaped to round which goes critical and explodes in a 1 Kiloton blast.
That particular tactical nuke is known as the W-54 "Davy Crockett">
1950's US Nuclear Technology
The Davy Crockett is from 1954 (W54).
The scary thing is that Clinton/Gore gave W-80 (1980's) nuclear technology to the Chinese Commies. One of the worst acts of treason in American history.
That is exactly what the rest of common sense people think.
DRILL BABY DRILL!
Five or six would do it. Bleed off as much as possible as fast as possible.
Impossible, we ran into peak oil a long time ago. There is no more oil </sarc>
Yeah at a mile deep in the ocean and three miles under the ocean floor. And little old you comes up with a solution that has eluded some of the best petroleum engineers in the world with a lifetime of experience in underwater drilling. If pigs had wings, they could fly.
I love the oil drum, it is my daily read now.
