MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A great wooden steamship that sank more than a century ago in a violent Lake Michigan storm has been found off the Milwaukee-area shoreline, and divers say the intact vessel appears to have been perfectly preserved by the cold fresh waters.
Finding the 300-foot-long L.R. Doty was important because it was the largest wooden ship that remained unaccounted for, said Brendon Baillod, the president of the Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Association.....

It's a discovery 112 years in the making. A group of explorers found a shipwreck in Lake Michigan near Milwaukee.
Bound for Midland, Ontario from South Chicago, the L-R Doty Steamship disappeared after facing 70 mile-per-hour winds and 30 foot waves.
The wreckage is submerged in 300 feet of water, 20 miles off the Oak Creek shore.
Divers took video and photos of the ship which appears to be upright and intact. It even has its cargo of corn.
Historians say the cold, fresh water and extreme depth preserved the ship, which sunk in 1898.

Lake Superior, it's said, never gives up her dead.
Lake Michigan will give up the dead, but she takes her own sweet time.

Nonsense. Lake Michigan's dead show up and vote Democrat in Chicago just like all the other dead people.

It would be intersting if any little bit of corn was sealed away and not wet, whether it could be germinated. It would be interesting to see the nature of the seed ear it produced, it’s height as a plant and it’s disease resistance, etc.

Someone did a parody of Lightfoot singing the Star Spangled Banner to that tune and it was hilarious
