Scythian - Since Dec 29, 1998
I've given my opus a few times but always came a crawlin' back. I figure if they go by "join date" we old timers will go first ...
So any active Freepers out there have joined dates more ancient than mine?
Aloha, Hawaii....I was coming to FR via Drudge and Whitewater. I had to beg to have computer time from my hostess. Neither of us shared very well. Then came the need to register and it just happened to be during my turn on the computer.
I lurked for awhile, too. Herb, the guy from Houston that died right after 9/11, brought me in from the CNN All Politics board. It took me several months to decide to sign up.
To those who thought at one time FR could be a force in conservative politics, he was an abomination.
To those who thought FR was an entertainment vending machine, he was the jewel in Jim’s tiara.
Looks like the vending machine won.

Apr 23, 1999—I’m just a pup...
I was at that time learning HTML on the internet at a website maintained by one of the fellows on the HTML committee (a professor at MIT), and he was kind of using me as a test bunny.
At some point in time the solution came from the programs that allowed us to dispense with writing all the commands out ~
1. March for Justice
2. Judgment Day Rally
3. House Managers Rally
4. Daily protests by MCM and the DCC in front of the White House.
5. Gene's protests on Florida cloverleafs.
6. Gene and Florida chapters activism at the counting of the ballots in Palm Beach.
7. The 200 rallies across America during the election debacle.
7. The 250 “Rallies for America” leading up to the invasion of Iraq.
8. The Free Republic Network.
Nobody cares, it was all an entertainment for the cymbal clanging monkeys in the cheap seats and we were just temporary players on the stage.
I could gone on and on about the keyboard cowboys on this site whom participants believed to be heroes of some kind who never lifted a finger, never donated a dime to Jim and never once stuck their necks out into the guillotine of public politics, but what use is it?
Posters like Ash and A+bert are the eternal heroes of this website, not people like Gene, or MCM or you or Nick and Scott or any of the other BOD members who had their neck stuck out like a turkey in November for many, many years.
Water finds it's own level and FR has found where it lies in the sands of time.

I was really embarrassed that day. About an hour before her accident and death were announced to the world I'd used her as an example of "Euro-trash" over on DB.
Ordinarily that crowd of slack jawed Leftwingtards would have laughed and laughed about it all, but when it involved her death, they didn't care that I'd posted something negative about her BEFORE THAT TIME, they were really angry I said it on the same day, and boy were they upset.
Princess DI appears to have been one of their heroes ~ after she was dead of course.
Never trust the lefties to live down to their stereotypes.
Well, it was certainly good for you to come out of retirement for this post, thanks for chiming in ol’ timer ...

In the beginning, you didn’t even need to join.
I can’t remember when I first signed up :)
But, when you've worked for the USPS Consumer Advocate for a couple of years there's no insult on Earth you have not heard delivered to you with a heartfelt resolve.
Oh, yeah, and they used to threaten to kill me or cut off necessary body parts.
But, yeah, I do remember him ~ and there was a time when FR was "alone" so the then "gleam in the eye" Tea Party wasn't on the scene Still, there are things you can do with direct action right on the internet.
I remember the time George W. Bush was in the fight of his life as the evil forces of the Algore were bearing down on him well aware that the polls demonstrated that the Florida results were incredibly tight and the victory might depend on a few thousand, or maybe just a few hundred votes.
Remember when the Democrats were getting local vote counting operations to cease counting absentee ballots from our troops overseas because they did not carry a postmark as required by Florida law.
So, let's see what was I doing ~ well I can't tell you yet, but there are some guys who lurk here who can.
Not that I'd do anything against the law, but when the Dems became so public with their flying teams of terror lawyers swooping down on Florida voting registrar offices on this one little issue, it gave me time to examine the issues and prepare (in my mind) a "ruling" that would result in those votes being counted.
The law is straightforward. The State of Florida doesn't run the post office. The post office doesn't run the State of Florida. However, postmarks are a strictly federal issue and its up to the post office to decide whether or not they are needed on a particular piece of mail. Absentee ballots from troops abroad were carried free of postage, ergo, no need for a postmark.
Federal law regarding the post office trumps state law every single time.
Bush would have won easily ~ just as the Supreme Court said later.
Without FR and its capability of communicating with activists to find out WHO might ought to know what the correct information was, "W" could have easily lost to another evil Algore trick.
Instead, "W" won.
Oct 1998. Was lurking back to 1997. Boy were those the days! I remember some guy with the moniker “Quid” or something like that. He was supposed to be an insider that knew that the dark suits had met with Clinton and he was on his way out. Man did he have us going.
Scythian, I beat you by a week.
I stumbled into FR by a link at Drudge. Never have found my way out!
