As the Sun Awakens, NASA Keeps a Wary Eye on Space Weather (solar EMP coming)

Earth and space are about to come into contact in a way that's new to human history. To make preparations, authorities in Washington DC are holding a meeting: The Space Weather Enterprise Forum at the National Press Club on June 8th. Many technologies of the 21st century are vulnerable to solar storms.

Richard Fisher, head of NASA's Heliophysics Division, explains what it's all about:

"The sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity. At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms. The intersection of these two issues is what we're getting together to discuss."

What they probably didn’t mention enough is that this is what they are guessing. And that their guesses so far have been pretty poor. And if the world is to be at risk, weeks before anything happens, the Sun would be covered with sunspots.

Which would give most people a lot of time to get ready. While granted, satellites would be affected, some of them can button up their shielding to make them more protected, others can be moved to different, safer orbits, aircraft can be temporarily grounded, etc.

At a personal level, sensitive electronic devices can be put in metal boxes or the equivalent, or just wrapped in aluminum foil. Unplugging appliances helps. Good old steel military ammo boxes work fine.

Much depends where you live. Homes built on rock are more susceptible than those on more sandy soil.

I’m guess I shouldn’t be so amazed that this is not a bigger news story. But really, why not? The MSM blows most things out of proportion and drives people into a panic. Now that we have a legitimate concern here, why aren’t people being told to prepare?

Yikes! Let’s hope the “compter models” are wrong again. But it would fit into the end times nightmare.

There, this should work for ya this time. :) It just reminded me of our conversation the other night. Pretty much dead on.

Because they want us living like Somalis, or better yet, dead.

Remember the Palestinians dancing and hooting in their sewage-filled streets on 9/11?

The entire progressive body politic would do the same thing if our carbon thumbprints all go to zero.

Careful cranking the dyno on those things (and most other such devices). The cheap plastic handles break. Otherwise a good radio.

I’m looking for one with better reception or at least an external antenna connection. car radios seem to do better at picking up distant stations, probably because of the antenna.
