The smart way for humans to go to Mars is for there to be accommodations waiting for them when they arrive. Literally.

The way to do this is to send robots first to prep for our arrival. By this I mean a nuclear powered horizontal tunneling robot, that will mine, reinforce and seal a very spacious tunnel for the astronauts to live inside.

After first doing the same on the Moon, to make a permanent underground Lunar base.

Such a robot doesn’t have to be fast, just thorough, and their lander can be cannibalized for things like pressure doors, ceiling, walls and flooring.

But the advantage to doing it this way is that a lot more supplies and equipment can be brought with, and what is done there can be cumulative, not just a brief one shot. The robots can spend years preparing for the humans to arrive.

And even better, the nuclear reactor that powers the robots will be ready and waiting to provide the astronauts with all the energy they need.

I'm in favor of going to Mars, but not at taxpayer expense. Once we get nuclear propulsion, so the trip takes at most a few weeks instead of six months, the picture changes for the better. If there's money to be made, private industry will go.

He’s right, at least partially. Man to Mars is basically un-doable right now. The mammoth cost isn’t even the main issue. It’s the technology. There’s simply no way to get there quickly and back.

“doubtful that an astronaut could accomplish something useful on Mars not already being done by robots at far less cost and with little danger to humans.”

Well, what about robot avatars permitting humans to experience walking on Mars without going there?

Also, it would be aesthetically appealing to visit Mars, whether in person or via an avatar.

Look:

We have no money to blow looking for water on this red hot planet

That's right - we need it to further fund Acorn.

Damn, this country has turned into a bunch of self-absorbed navel gazers.
