The first thing the communist does is lie.
Superb look at the nightmare that befell the Americans who emigrated to Stalin’s “worker’s utopia”. Some of these people were lefty true believers, others were desperate to find relief from FDR’s economic miracle, others just innocent family members dragged into Hell by foolish parents. The American press and State Department don’t come off too well.
Another good one is COMING OUT OF THE ICE, by Victor Herman. It came out something like 30 years ago. Herman was a young boy, taken to USSR in early 1930s by his Communist father who got a job in a Soviet auto plant. Herman was unable to leave after his father's death. He grew up in the USSR, was one of those sent to Siberia, managed to survive the labor camps, and eventually was able to return to the US.
Prices on Amazon are ridiculous, but maybe you can find it in a library.

While it was criminal for them to do so, at least those Americans had freely chosen to face the risks of leaving their homeland. Even worse crime was perpetrated by Roosevelt and Churchill at Yalta when they ceded Central and Eastern Europe to Stalin.
I knew several children of those foreign nationals who disappeared. One family was Norwegian and my grandfather married an Italian after my grandmother died.
Another category that was similarly duped were Russians living abroad. They, too were promised a life of milk and honey, and ended up almost without exception in the labor camps.
