I can’t get over how much people humanize animals.

Like how? By realizing their habits and needs?

Cats like to have a stable home with food and shelter....just like you.

Your neighbor’s a heartless moron who is breaking the law.

He takes the cats to the local shelter for caring people to adopt. The ones with tags are returned to their owners.

>>Like how? By realizing their habits and needs? <<

No one in this article is actually recognizing the cats’ habits or needs. They are humanizing their instincts and attributing human emotion.

Feral cats, like any wild animal, are lead by two things, need for food, need for procreation. Period. In my years of volunteering at animal shelters, I saw many a feral cat given a forever home, far away from it’s original turf. They do just fine. They are not human and are not sentimental, pining for the old turf.

His neighbor, who is using a live trap, is doing feral cats a service.

What would you prefer? Poison, spring trap?

My neighbor decided to “take in” three cats, which meant moving them from a neighborhood where the original owner didn’t want them, to ours. (Kind of blows that territory idea) These cats used gardens as litterboxes, scratched and hissed at anyone who happened to walk across THEIR own YARD where the cats decided to hide and had feline AIDS. In the meantime the new “owner” left food out constantly which attracted rats and raccoons.

The neighbor on the other side, having enough of the stench of cat urine, used a live trap and took them to the humane society where they were euthanize. Fine with me. My indoor cat didn’t need to contract AIDS from these animals, should he sneak out the door.

Personally, I’ve seen many a cat dead on the road. You want a pet, keep it in your house, for your enjoyment, safe and sound. Your pet is your pet. I’ll take care of my own, thank you very much.

Not always. The trap is actually part of a humane technique that has been very successful locally - we trap, neuter, inoculate, and release. The healthier but sterile cat fills the territory without breeding. Everybody wins.

Believe it or not, it really does work. We cleared out a local condominium complex of feral cats without any of them getting shot or run over.

Not all feral cats are 'wild'.
Cats when released in new locations immediately run to try to find their old home...they do not stay at the new place....esp if other cats are in that area. Cats are territorial and chase the new ones out. Putting the new cat in a room/barn for a few weeks will help the cat adjust and it may stick around...but, unless this step is taken...just releasing the cat in a new place...it just takes off....looking for it's old home.

We have two cats that stay in the garage at night. There are too many racoons, skunks, possums, coyotes and other animals in our area to let them stay outside. They go outside during the day, but stay in our yard for the most part.

One got hit by a car and we had to have her “patched up” a few years ago. She is doing very good again. Both of our cats are fixed, get shots annualy and have ID tags.

There are several cats that roam the neighborhood at night and we hear them fighting outside. Most of those don’t have collars or tags. They come into our yard sometimes, but our dog will run them out.

Cats are not meant to ‘stay inside’...just like you or a dog isn’t meant to do. Not long ago, in my fathers generation and before...people never let cats in the house..it was taboo and unacceptable.. It’s only in these last couple generations where people expect perfect pristine maniicured lawns with no tolerance of nature (excpet for the disease carryin g birds which these idiots feed). It’s the old man “get off my lawn’ syndrome that spreads in shallow people.

Um, yes they are. Let's look at what feral means... feral Definition fe·ral[ frəl ] ADJECTIVE 1. gone wild: describes animals or plants that live or grow in the wild after having been domestically reared or cultivated "feral cats" 2. savage: similar to or typical of a wild animal, or living wild And seriously, cats don't always run to find their old homes. In fact, on an average they don't. Otherwise one could never move nor place an animal. It doesn't matter anyway. Feral cats are wild. Take away their food source and they will move. Simple as that.

>>Cats are not meant to ‘stay inside’.<<

You weren’t meant to eat with a fork. So?

Keep your cat in your house for safety. Enjoy your animal. It’s your pet. For safety and the consideration of your neighbors who OWN their property and have the right to keep it however they want, keep your cat inside. Personally, I think that anyone who lets a cat out to roam as they want and poo in my kid’s sandbox is a selfish, lazy person who doesn’t want to deal with a litter box.

I have a great big screened porch for my inside cats to enjoy....but, there are abandoned stray and feral cats I have all over the place who deserve to live.

>>....but, there are abandoned stray and feral cats I have all over the place who deserve to live.<<

Why?
Abandoned and feral cats are no different than squirrels. We as humans have taken away their natural predators. It is now our job to thin them.

Without human intervention, they would multiply to the point of population crash. And take a lot of our pets with them.

I have many cats that were born in the wild and are not WILD. Wild has many meanings I suppose, but I can pick mine up. ,P>I am willing to admit that there might be a few cats that will be petrified to try to find their own home....but the idiots that are dumping their cats to this popular location behind a plaza where I feed, think they hang around. I have not seen one of those cats hand around. I've seen them dead on the street....but not one of the possibly 10 cats that were dumped are around. They took off....naturally trying to find their own homes again.

Feral cats are wild. Take away their food source and they will move. Simple as that.

That is stupid and cruel. Most of those cats were abandoned and are looking for food..they are starving and you take away their food. they are traumatized and have it tough as it is, and you take away the one thing they had. Very cruel. Heartless.

Who in the world fed those cats before humans did?
What did they eat before Purina Cat Chow?

By feeding those cats, you are contributing to the problem. When I was a cat shelter worker, we detested people who fed feral cats. Well fed cats breed, underfed cats do not. By feeding them, you are letting the females bodies build up enough fat to ovulate. If you truly cared about them, you would stop feeding them and let them find food of their own. You know, rodents, birds etc. It’s lean protein and does not build fat so they are less likely to drop litters. If you can pick them up, do it and take them to a shelter. Where they can get neutered, spayed and a proper home.

When Purina bags grow on trees, come back and talk to me about taking away their food supply. Talk about heartless. Feeding feral cats contributes to population explosions. Think about it.
