Not all feral cats are 'wild'.
Cats when released in new locations immediately run to try to find their old home...they do not stay at the new place....esp if other cats are in that area. Cats are territorial and chase the new ones out. Putting the new cat in a room/barn for a few weeks will help the cat adjust and it may stick around...but, unless this step is taken...just releasing the cat in a new place...it just takes off....looking for it's old home.

Um, yes they are. Let's look at what feral means... feral Definition fe·ral[ frəl ] ADJECTIVE 1. gone wild: describes animals or plants that live or grow in the wild after having been domestically reared or cultivated "feral cats" 2. savage: similar to or typical of a wild animal, or living wild And seriously, cats don't always run to find their old homes. In fact, on an average they don't. Otherwise one could never move nor place an animal. It doesn't matter anyway. Feral cats are wild. Take away their food source and they will move. Simple as that.
